My candidate’s statement

Posted in Alpine Shire Council, Bright Australia by Ray Dixon on 29 October, 2008

This is the statement I’m lodging with the returning officer for the Alpine council election.

Let's put the Alpine Shire 'on the map'

Let's put the Alpine Shire 'on the map'

The statement of ‘no more than 150 words’ will appear in the booklet that comes out with the ballot papers (in just a couple of week’s time!), along with a ‘mug-shot’ of yours truly in very unflattering black & white. Oh well, we’ve gotta keep the costs of running the election down; it’s not like we’re the State or Federal government where money spent on elections seems to be no object.

I hope I’ve managed to get across how I genuinely ’feel’ about the shire and especially the town of Bright. My reasons for wanting to get elected are simply this – I believe I CAN make a difference, for the better.

As a long-term resident of Bright and business operator, I am passionate about our beautiful Alpine Shire region in which we are all privileged to live. Our unique environment and the charm of our towns are our key strengths. I believe the main challenge the Alpine Council will face over the coming years is to ensure the preservation of our natural assets, heritage buildings and the management of our precious resources, such as water supply, while maintaining a steady economic growth. I have often spoken up for the town of Bright and the wider area on a range of environmental, economic & social issues and, if elected, I would ensure full consultation with the community on all important decisions. It’s good Ray.

Is there a leaflet in the works?

Thanks Kieran. Yes, but I’ll be writing it a bit differently.

I wish you well & if elected, don’t forget your responsibilities are to all the Shire, not just Bright.

I hope we don’t see the kind of pronouncements of the past where you denigrated other parts of the shire, particularly Myrtleford. For example, will your policies include lobbying to amalgamate Myrtleford with the City of Wangaratta – a view you expressed a number of times?

Thanks Noel (I think). I’m well aware that the shire extends beyond Bright and no, I wouldn’t be taking any such policy regarding Myrtleford joining Wang into council. It’s not up to me (or anyone else on council) to initiate that. It would be up to the community of Myrtleford to make it clear that it’s what they wanted to do – as some have. Somehow though I doubt there’d be enough groundswell support for it, so it’s really a moot point.

    Hi Ray,

On my Alpine Election blog I now will also require a poster’s full name (to be published), suburb or town (to be published), and email address (not to be published). I suspect we won’t get too many posts now but at least we will be complying with requirements. I have deleted all previous posts which have not included the above. All posters will now be put on moderation control except those nominating for council.

I suspect we will not receive too many posts now.

I think you’re wise to do that, Lesley, even though it will obviously reduce the number of comments received. Candidates might take a while to come around to putting comments on our respective blogs but it would be good for the voters if at least some of them participated.

PS: As my blog is longer established than yours, Lesley, I’ve had to set ALL comments to admin control. There are many previous comments using aliases, which means I really have no alternative way of controlling it.
