The Star Hotel on the corner of Gavan Street & Star Road in Bright is going up for auction on 4 December.

The adjoining land has already been sold to Woolworths, who have commenced clearing the site in readiness for the building of the controversial supermarket & speciality shop development. Woolworths also owns hotels & gaming venues so it’s possible they’ll be a bidder. No doubt there’ll be howls of protest and “I told you so” claims over this but the reality is, the owner of The Star (Shane Whelan) is entitled to sell his property to the highest bidder and the council can only wait and see what might develop from there. It’s a commercial world!

I read the notice board this morning whilst walking the dog and you have stated my exact thoughts.

Do you know if Woolworths are required to resubmit plans? I gather they would if they do not use the previous plans Coles were proposing.

They’d have to submit any variations to the Supermarket plans, Andrew, but unless the changes are significant, I think it would probably be dealt with by the administration.

But if they wanted to make major changes to the approved plans I think they might have to re-advertise and then it would be open for submissions, with the councillors ultimately deciding.

That’s the process, as I understand it.

As for The Star, well if Woolies bought it and kept it as a hotel then no approval would be required, as it’s the same use.

PS: In my opinion this topic is not an ‘electoral matter’, so I think the requirements of the Act do not apply and anyone is free to comment on it under whatever name they choose to use.
