I’m off to the footy

This is Etihad Towers ~ the ground must be somewhere nearby. Melbourne sure has changed a lot.

This is Etihad Towers, so I guess the ground must be somewhere nearby. Bloody hell, Melbourne sure has changed a lot.

But where the hell is Etihad?

Last time I went to the football it was played in that new indoor footy ground that Jeff Kennett had built behind Spencer Street Station. I think they called it Dockerland or Telecom Oval or something like that. You know the one, it’s where they played on concrete.

Now they tell me the Saints are playing at somewhere called Etihad, but I’m buggered if I can find that suburb in my 1993 Melways. It must be one of those new first-home buyer estates that have sprung up in the western & northern suburbs because apparently it’s near a new railway station called Southern Cross, which is not in my Melways either. Geezus, it’ll be crawling with bogans.

Why can’t they just go back to Moorabbin? I liked it there and a reserve seat was only $10. Anyway, I’ll be back late Monday. Go Saints.

Good news, I found the ground. It’s in the same place that other one was. Why’d they go and do that?

Good news #2: The Saints won – just.

Essendon are coming along nicely.Do you think they can knock off Geelong in Round 10?

Etihad sounds like a made-up word to me. Or an anagram.

Essendon were very good, Rox, and just lacked some key forwards & defenders. But sorry, they wouldn’t be any match for Geelong in my opinion.

Etihad is a very poor choice for a stadium name, made with one thing in mind – $$$$s. The Docklands management are disgraceful and simply charge too much for seats, parking and everything else. Burn it down, blow it up.

I agree with you regarding “the shed” Ray but that’s Collo for you. Look at what he did to Carlton and he was supposed to be one of their own. He couldn’t organise a beer festival in a brewery and Docklands reflects it!

“just lacked some key forwards & defenders”

Is that all Ray? What’s left? The midfield?

Well if you’d had a fit Fletcher and an in-form Lucas in the side you would have won. So you need to find replacements for those dinosaurs and then you’ve got a chance of September action.

better than barking/howling at it like Colliscum supporters do Rox

The unfortunate reality is Rox, that young fast players tend to burn out early in the 2nd half of the season. They are what’s driving Essendon at the moment so I still doubt they’ll make the finals. Although they’re going to do alright for a few weeks yet.
