AFL round 10 ‘Round-up’

"Up yours, Demetriou".

"Up yours, Demetriou".

It’s a hard game and to be successful and come out on top you need heaps of skill, buckets of physical & mental toughness, an endless supply of endurance, more guts than a Brahma bull, more bravery than William Wallace and more intelligence than Einstein. This round proved that the cream will always rise to the top and that the ‘Footy Gods’ do recognise and reward persistence, perseverance and total commitment to the task of … footy tipping. Guess who picked a ‘perfect 8′?

What’s that got to do with Ben Cousins’ one-fingered salute before Saturday night’s game? Well nothing, but I think my effort (in picking all 8 winners) is a bigger news story and maybe we should just leave the boy alone. Here is the game by game summary of the round (in which I swept the pool) with ‘expert’ comments by the only person in the whole country to pick 8 from 8 ~ me! :

Carlton defeated West Coast: And now they’re getting all excited again. Calm down Carlton, you’re just a team of boys from a bankrupt club and your season will probably end in August.

Bulldogs defeated Sydney: After my sojourn into Melbourne’s western suburbs over the weekend, I have new-found respect for Footscray. I mean, I’d rather live there than at Point Cook!

Nth Melbourne lost to Brisbane : In front of a crowd of about 500. Why risk swine flu to see a game like that one?

Fremantle lost to RichmondBoth sides put in a tremendous amount of effort to find new ways of throwing the game away, but in the end there had to be loser and, as usual, Freo did not let us down. Although not many were game to pick Ricmond and only the real ‘experts’ saw the certainty of that result.

St Kilda defeated Melbourne : Here I go with my ‘excuses’ for the Saints only winning by 37 points. (1) Carrara is a crap ground that is just too big and doesn’t suit a team built on strong defence. (2) We actually missed Steven Milne. (3) Inaccuracy - the Saints kicked 4.10 in the second half while holding the Dees to 0.4 and they really should have won this game by much more.

Essendon lost to Geelong : By plenty, in another punishing performance that reinforces how they’re a cut above the rest, including St Kilda.

Adelaide defeated Hawthorn : I saw this one coming while most other ‘experts’ did not. Did I mention that I picked all 8 winners?

Collingwood defeated Pt Adelaide : Any team that turns up in those poncy colours Pt Adelaide wore deserves to be belted. What a pity I had to barrack for the Pies to get my ‘perfect 8′. I have no moral fibre.

Highlight of the round : My tipping.

Lowlight : Ben’s finger.

Tipping results: Ray 8 (a ‘perfect’ score), Baldrick 6.

Year to date tipping: Ray 57, Baldrick 56.

Did I mention I tipped 8 from 8? Just checking.

Good to see you modest and gracious in victory Ray. What a fool Cousins is. He can’t afford to be taking risks like that, even if some of us do think it’s a storm in a teacup.

Allow me this indulgence Rox – it doesn’t happen very often. As for Cousins – well yeah he’s a fool. But let’s get over it.

    Wallace is gone

What I think is stupid is the mock outrage over Cousins. I lost count of how many times that grab was shown over the weekend, if it’s truly as disturbing and offensive as all of the nanas from the AFL and various media organisations seem to think, then why re-broadcast it?

    A load of tosh.

Well Dave, it’s having massive ramifications. Already it’s cost the coach his job – who’s next?

Do you think that was the reason? I’m surprised – it’s so trivial. But I said that about Beazley confusing Karl Rove with Rove McManus – and that turned into a big deal too.

It was just another of my insipid attempts at humour Rox. No, Wallace has been ‘dead man walking’ since about round 4. Although it WAS his decision to draft Cousins and, in hindsight, it hasn’t proved to be a winning move. But as they say, hindsight is a very …

Wallace should’ve got another 5 years.
It’s bollocks that he’s taken the brunt. I’m pissed off. Cousins sums up my feelings towards the media right now.
If I ever see that Robinson…..

I’m tipping Richmond will roll the Bulldogs this week and will win quite a few more for the year. (Um, I’ve still got a few days to change my mind about that though)

Funny thing is though Ray, if we do roll them we’ll be 3-8 …same as this time last year. Difference is we didn’t have a fit list going into the year.
    I dunno anymore.
    Go Tigers.

Come on Ray – I have to go away tomorrow for the weekend. Hawks/Swans? Can’t come at the Tiges beating the Dogs.

That’s a tough one Rox. Look, I think Hawthorn should win it, but I wouldn’t put any money on it (and I might even change my mind before I put my tips up later tonight).

As for Richmond v Bulldogs, again, that’s tough. Bulldogs are the safer bet but the question is … are you a risk taker?

That was a great help, I’m sure!

You mean, do I feel lucky punk? Err, no. Who’s Freo going to let me down against this week? I’m backing the Power, but I hate them both. I hope they both lose.

  14. Ray Dixon (Bright) said, on 4 June, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Pt Adelaide v Freo? The ‘rules’ say:

    (1) Never pick Freo
    (2) When 2 interstate sides play go for the home side.

So that means Port – but they’re no certainty.

  15. roxannatas said, on 4 June, 2009 at 8:08 pm

You mean Freo might win? Is that what you’re saying?

I’ll get the tips in the morning and see if they match mine. If they do, I’d be worrying.
