Every time I head down to Melbourne I fill up at Bright and think, “won’t it be good to fill up in Melbourne at about 15c less per litre?”
Yeah, wishful thinking.
Somehow I think that the oil companies have got a web-cam on the Hume Highway and whenever they see me heading south they go, “Ha! We’ll fix that bastard”.
And they do, nearly every time.
In fact what I’m about to describe has happened so often that it’s not funny:
So, I’ve had my mother staying here since last Sunday and on Wednesday I do the right thing and, instead of taking her to the bus stop and saying, “have a nice 8-hour trip home Mum”, I drive her all the way back to Melbourne, which takes about 4 hours as compared to the arduous bus & train trip (you see, she’s 83 and not the best at getting herself from point A to point B).
Anyway, I get her home and I’m stuffed because I also drove down to Melbourne on Sunday morning for my sister’s birthday and then back to Bright the same day (with Mum in the back) so I decide to stay at my daughter’s place overnight and, as I’m driving there, I see petrol is about $1.12 per litre. “Good, I just paid $1.25 in Bright, I’ll fill up in the morning before I head home,” I say to myself (I talk a lot to myself when I’m in the car).
So what happens in the morning? Yeah, that’s right, overnight the price in Melbourne jumps by 17c to $1.29, which is more than I paid back home! I kid you not, I’ve been caught out like that so many times that I’m sure it’s all a conspiracy specifically aimed at me.
Anyway, the point I’m making is this. From now on, every time I’m about to head off to Melbourne I’m going to send warning emails to everyone who cares to place their details on ‘Ray’s petrol price gauge register’.
That way all you Melbournites will know it’s time to get out and fill the car before the price goes up again.
Cost to register? Only $5 ~ and you’ll get that back in savings ten or twenty times over in one year, as I go down to Melbourne fairly often.
It’s a win for you and a win for me ~ just send your details to ray @ grevilleagardens .com (oh, and put $5 in the mail).

Well, Ray, I was meaning to ask how the party went and I’m happy to surmise “OK” as you’re obviously still with us.
As for the petrol Companies, well they might as well open bank branches too, and bask in the glory of the rest of the bastards.
As for that invite to send moula your way via AusPost, I wouldn’t open a special bank account just yet. The idea’s OK, it’s just the execution that’s got me a little concerned.
It’s a fail-proof system JR. I go to Melbourne, they put the petrol prices up – happens nearly every time. You WILL save money!
Ray petrol always jumps up that much on a Wednesday afternoon, you need to time your trips for a Tuesday.
Sshh, I’m getting people registering Wah.
Thanks, Wah, I was tempted. Here I was thinking why is this man being so obliging … well that’s my whole fortnight’s pocket money saved then.
