Costello quits (again)

"Yous don't know how good I coodabeen if only yous had given me the job."

And in other news today, former Treasurer and wannabe PM, Peter Costello, has announced he will not contest the next election finally putting an end to speculation about whether or not the sneering backbencher will make a run for the job (as Opposition Leader) after Malcolm Turnbull & the Libs inevitably go down again. Well, “finally” for now.

I wonder what happened? Did that big $4 million per year corporate job offer – that he thought he had in the bag when he announced on election night 24 November 2007 that he was quitting then and there - finally come through? We’ll have to wait and see, I guess.

I could write a whole lot more about ‘Pouting Peter’ or put up some of the quotes from his personal website explaining his decision, but I see that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Lib Leader Malcolm Turnbull have already paid tribute to him and I don’t want to pollute the airwaves any more than necessary. Hence the small photo of ‘The man who could have been King’, if only he’d had the balls to take it.

Oh shit, there goes my retirement money! I was hoping King Costello and his partner in crime, Slimey Abbott were dead cert for a return of the chosen party. I had that exclusive line of pictorial dartboards ready to retail. Guess what they would have featured and boy, would they have sold like hot cakes?

He’s just as likely to ‘change his mind’ again, JR. I just wish he’d change his underpants.

I mourn the loss of the prospect of an Abbott and Costello government.

Hope he does change his mind. Whether or not he’s on the correct side of things, it’s vitally important to have good strong quality opposition to all governments (we all saw what happened whilst Howard was in, personally my opinion is that it was good over-all). He would’ve provided that. But who’d blame him if there is a good job out there for him to chase? He’s got the resume for any high paying job. Good luck to him, and Pete, thanks for the Baby Bonus!!

The baby bonus is Costello’s legacy to Australia.

No, his legacy is a divided Liberal party.

If Costello had taken the reigns in ‘07 he would have gone to the next election unchallenged and had the authority to build a new platform for the Liberal Party. Instead they are a divided rabble and Turnbull does not have the authority to lay down a cohesive policy strategy. I think he would have lost an election, but that would have provided clean air for the party to renew under a new leader, instead they are going to put a bullet into their best hope of electoral success after he gets stomped on in 2010.

He didn’t have the spine to risk losing an election.

I just heard that Costello will receive more from his annual Parliamentary pension than he currently receives from his salary as a backbencher. I think the pensions are based on 2/3 rds of the annual salary but I also think it’s averaged out over the last two terms and that includes the much higher salary he received as Treasurer. Not a bad lurk. Quit your job and get an instant pay rise for not being employed.
