I’ve just listened to Sarah Palin’s video. I think she made it clear she intends to take over Mother Teresa’s orphanage in India and from there save the troops in Kosovo by creating a basketball team coached by someone else. Does she write her own stuff?

Vijay, it’s not only you. And they’re not only disconnected, they’re totally incoherent. She uses all the wrong metaphors and what she ends up saying at the end of a statement has nothing to do with what she started saying. She’s a real scatterbrain and only in America could someone of her low level of intellect reach such high office. But not President … although George W wasn’t a lot better!

I won’t read it, Bertus. It’s too “depressing”.

I actually believe the old adage of ‘when America sneezes we catch a cold’ is no longer apt and hasn’t been for a long time. America’s real estateindustry (which is where all these problems started) has always been crazy and in no way correlated to ours. The Yanks don’t understand real estate investment and are more into ‘flipping’ and short term rip off stuff than sensible investment. Also, the percentage of home ownership has always been quite low compared to ours. The imbalance in wealth distribution in the US is like in 3rd world countries. I know we have our disadvantaged and underclasses here, but it’s never been anything like what it is in the US.

Now I realise that these ‘toxic debts’ were packaged up and on-sold to the dumb arses of the world (a town in Norway comes to mind) but I don’t think any of that directly or even indirectly impacts us greatly. Our banks were on the originating side and got a bit burnt initially but they wrote that off in 2007/08 and now they’re well & truly in the clear and steaming ahead with their obscene profits.

Some people say that when the overseas banks implode, as they’ve been doing, that’ll mean there won’t be any money left for Australian companies and Govts to borrow. I don’t agree. You see, the thing is that capital never goes up in smoke, never disappears, it just changes hands and that means that what we are seeing is a wealth shift. Those with the money will continue to lend it but they’ll wait until the opposition is flattened.

jr – well, I sure hope you’re wrong. Seems to me if you talk to five economists you get ten different opinions about what’s going on. Some respected people don’t think we’ll even see a recession, while others agree with you.

Well, here’s my bit of balance. All the artificial economy stimulation will eventually run out of steam, after which the whole mess will implode.

Then we’ll have all this fabulous mineral wealth and very few, if any, customers to sell it to.

That’s when the real depression will kick in.

From the look of it, there are still many trillions of dollars in toxic debt fermenting away in banks. Tick, tick, tick …

Look out McDonalds, soup kitchens will be the new wave of “dining out”.

Well the way she was talking and the things she said suggested that she was under some kind of pressure and/or investigation. So the ‘free house building’ rumour would seem to fit. We’ll see. She’ll never get the nomination to run for President. Even the Republicans aren’t that stupid. Although ….

I mean, she can’t possibly be running for POTUS. It’s more than three years out. How does she know she’d even get nominated? How does she know she’ll still be well and/or keen or that nothing else will have changed? How does she know that a much stronger candidate won’t emerge from the woods (the way Obama did)?

A proven way to make a run for POTUS is to be IN a State Governor’s job until as late in the campaign as possible. Shows people you can do the job, you’re tough enough, you’re popular etc. Call it the Ronnie Raygun Method.

So I reckon it has to be something else, and that means either scandal, or some lucrative deal, maybe a TV deal of some sort. FWIW.

Sounds very feasible, Bertus. That sort of thing goes on all the time even at our own local council levels. A building firm gets a major council contract and the mayor or some executive gets some free building work on their home. Hmm, I’ve heard a lot of rumours about things like that around here too so I certainly wouldn’t put it past her.
