AFL round 15 ‘Round-Up’

"Freo, way to go."

"Freo, way to go."

Geelong loses two in a row! … Melbourne wins two in a row! ….

… and Freo kicks ‘a’ goal

They’ve really got to go. Who wants to see Freo stay in the AFL? Not me. Kick them out and bring in Tassie. What ‘TV ratings value’ does Freo have for you, Andy? No one likes them!

Here’s the ’round-up’:

Bulldogs lost to Collingwood : By one point … but it might as well have been by 50. Footscray didn’t look like they wanted to win despite Collingwood stopping to a walk after being nearly 7 goals up. It’s hard to know what to make of that game – if they’re the 3rd & 4th best sides then 1 & 2 don’t have much to worry about.

Sydney lost to Essendon : Proving that they are all but a spent force and that we certainly don’t need a 2nd side in Sydney. The Bombers keep defying the odds (and me) by winning games that they shouldn’t.

Carlton defeated Richmond : Proving absolutely nothing.

Brisbane defeated were gifted a win by Geelong : I wonder if Thompson’s decision to rest 7 key players due to ’soreness & injury’ and virtually concede defeat was the right one? Sure, they’ll get them back fresher for the break but do you want to be ‘easing up’ at this time of the year? Other sides might sense Geelong is either complacent, vulnerable or both.

Adelaide defeated destroyed & embarrassed Fremantle : 1.7.13 is the lowest score since Richmond managed just 0.8.8 against St Kilda … in 1961 ! Yep, worst performance by any side in nearly 50 years. Freo, out you go. Disband, go away, piss off.

Hawthorn defeated Nth Melbourne : I watched most of this game and I reckon Hawthorn are just not really interested this year. They only did what they had to do and played well in just short bursts. Against most other sides they would not have got away with it. As for North, they’re a long way from the top.

Melbourne defeated Pt Adelaide : Much to the surprise of their own fans who, once again, refused to turn up. Why play games like this at the MCG when a suburban venue like um, …. Elsternwick Oval could hold the same crowd? The Dees are ‘on a roll’ and must reckon they’re half a chance next week against Geelong. As for Port … nah, I couldn’t be bothered.

West Coast lost to St Kilda: The Saints were obviously affected by last week’s hard game and were just not as sharp as usual, but at least they didn’t take a rest and throw the towel in. A 15 minute last quarter burst was all it took to sew it up and remain undefeated.

Highlight of the round: It should be a lowlight but Freo’s pathetic performance was so bad it was good.

Lowlight: Geelong conceding defeat at the selection table. I wonder if Gary went surfing again?

Tipping : Ray 5, Baldrick 4

Year to date: Ray 85, Baldrick 84

Quote of the week:

“It is a bit of a concern. We have to do a little bit of work and find our real hunger and get our real sharpness back because we are a little bit flat at the moment. I felt like I was coaching about six years ago. We didn’t have that many good players on the ground.” ~ Geelong coach Mark Thompson states the obvious.

Yes the Swans are officially ‘gorn’ for the year and Roos should field some of the rookies and try out new combinations. Ordinary way for Mickey O to finish his career but at least he can look back on three GFs and a Premiership.

Another lowlight of the round was yesterday’s Port – Melb game. Dennis Cometti said it best – he said it was a good game ‘if you like your footy with slapstick’.

I didn’t see any of it, Bertus, but I reckon Melbourne would think it was an “epic victory”, just like the Poms seem to think last night’s draw in the First Test was an “epic fightback”.
