Buckland Valley Quarry
‘Save the Buckland’?
This letter regarding the proposed 5 hectare quarry appeared in today’s Bright Observer.
I don’t have a firm view on this issue yet but I think that applications for extractive industries like quarries really need to be scrutinised quite heavily before they’re approved.
In this case the site is (a) Near a residential area (b) Near the Buckland River (b) In a beautiful, natural & scenic location. And, as the writer points out, the area is severely flood prone – in fact I believe the site is in the old river course.
I don’t think it matters that the quarry “only” proposes to extract pebbles & rocks for landscaping purposes, and that it will “only” be a few metres deep; there are bound to be issues here involving the environment, noise & amenity and I think the concerns should be taken very seriously. Quarries are not exactly among the most environmentally friendly industries and the siting of them is crucial, especially in area as pristine as the Buckland Valley.
I’d like to hear more views on this and if anyone has some photos of the site please email them to ray@grevilleagardens.com
