AFL round 17 ‘Round-Up’
It must have been a FULL MOON(EY) …
That’s the only explanation I’ve got for some of the results. Think about it: Hawthorn outclassing & out-pressuring Geelong for 3 and a bit quarters only to shut up shop and let the Cats come storming home from 5 goals down to kick a point after the siren and steal a game they had all but lost (no disrespect meant to Geelong’s effort).
Freo defying its normal last quarter fade-out to fall in by 5 pts.
And Richmond forgetting about draft picks to take a game that Essendon simply had to win.
I give up! Here’s the ’round-up’:
Carlton lost to disgraced itself against Collingwood : I wonder if they’ve got any mirrors down at Princes Park? Probably not, they’re too used to getting pats on the back from their toffy and ‘born to rule’ members. Well forget it Blue Boys, you are pretenders through and through and you truly do need to go and stand in ‘the room of mirrors’ and ‘take a long hard look at yourself’ … and then give up! Pity it had to be Collingwood to prove this to them. What a pathetic display by Carlton.
Geelong defeated stole a game from Hawthorn : I suppose it’s slightly better than Hawthorn winning. That would have been a terrible thing to happen for all our sakes. But now Geelong is talking premierships! What, after overcoming a team outside the eight by one point? Er, you’ve still got a long way to go Cats.
Fremantle defeated were just slightly less inept than West Coast : And that says it all.
Brisbane defeated Nth Melbourne : Year’s most predictable result. Poor North, not even the inexperienced thickhead Buckley is interested in being their coach.
St Kilda defeated totally outplayed Bulldogs : Another example of the Saints’ pressure tactics forcing the opposition into error and capitalising on it. The big question is “Can St Kilda go undefeated for the whole season”? Well, we’re not even bothering with that one, we’re just focused on next week.
Melbourne lost tanked to Sydney : In front of just 7,000 people in icy-cold and uninterested Canberra. This was ‘Rivalry Round’ so the AFL pits Australia’s two biggest cities against each other in the middle of nowhere?? Good move.
Essendon lost to Richmond : And I’ve got no idea how. The Bombers had everything to gain by a win while the Tigers had everything to lose by one. So why did they win? It’s beyond me.
Adelaide defeated wiped the floor with Pt Adelaide : And I still can’t believe I picked Port! We Victorians know nothing about how footy works over there in Croweating land. Nor do we care.
Highlight of the round : Were there any? Let me know if you can think of one.
Lowlight : Too many to mention, but the ‘quality’ of the footy played by Carlton stands out quite a bit.
Tipping : Ray 4, Baldrick 6
Year to date: Ray 96, Baldrick 96 … game on!

Geelong overcame the reigning Premiers by a point after being 28 points down 10 minutes into the third quarter, with two key defenders down including Matthew Scarlett, and Buddy Franklin in his best form for the year – how the hell did Hawthorn not win by 10 goals?
Here’s why. Hawthorn didn’t stop, Geelong managed to pull off one of the great performances of the year and if you watch that last quarter (I have five times) the manner in which Geelong tackled, passed the ball and broke through the cluster was incredible. Andrew Mackie’s performance on Franklin should have got him best on ground – trouble was Selwood got 28 touches in the second half, Bartel was at his best and Joel Corey shook off the yips he had for most of the game to set up that win.
And the full Moon did an excellent job in the ruck.
I gave up on them at three quarter time, but something sprang into action and if that form continues than yes they are definately back in town especially if they can get Steve Johnson, James Kelly, Tom Harley and Brad Ottens back on the track as well as Scarlett and Taylor who will miss the big match against Adelaide.
Remeber Ray, Geelong were a kick from doing the same to St Kilda – let’s hope these two great teams do indeed play off in September.
It’s the contest we all want, Wah. I can’t see anyone else getting there.
