Message to Eastlink …
… You need much better cameras
This ‘infringement notice’ arrived in the mail yesterday claiming I owe the Eastlink people the princely sum of $8.83 for driving on their freeway without an E-tag. The registration number (obliterated) is correct and it’s true I don’t have an E-tag, but everything else about it is wrong because:
- I live in Bright, about 350 kms from where Eastlink claim I was driving.
- I’ve never been on the new Eastlink freeway and I can’t remember the last time I was anywhere near Greens Road, Dandenong.
- On Tuesday 16 June between 6.53 am and 6.54 am I was home in bed and I’m sure no one borrowed my car overnight and took it for a spin down to the Eastlink.
And that’s what I told the Eastlink operator when I finally got through (ignoring the stupid instruction that “An objection must be in writing…”). To cut a very tedious and long story short, the bottom line is that Eastlink will “investigate” my complaint and call me back. This despite the fact that their Vicroad search, for which they want to charge $1.40, should have told them the make and type of vehicle I drive – i.e. a sedan.
Whereas the “Vehicle Class: HCV” circled above stands for a “Heavy Classified Vehicle”.
Er, um, I don’t drive a truck. Somehow I think I’m in the clear here.
PS: One minute on Eastlink costs nearly $9 ?? I’m so glad I don’t live in Melborne any more.

Come off it, Ray, that thing you drive looks like a Big Mac. That’s probably where they got confused.
As for the number plate, you know data can be manipulated to make it read whatever you wish.
Now we come to the touchy part. Been caught out “tom catting”, eh?
Yes, I ‘ve got a thing going with a bogan from Dandenong – it’s her truck!!!
Geez, it’s a wonder she trusts you with her big mac.
I wish she’d get an E-Tag.
Why don’t you make it a defamation case. That would have them pissing into their own breeze!
They haven’t defamed me, JR. Others have but I let it go through to the keeper (with the odd jab back here & there).
I think the Shire have also made a blunder of our rates for this year. Cannot believe the increase – I pay nearly $2000 for my house!
What percetage did yours increase by, Andrew? It was supposed to only be 4.8% and there has not been a revaluation – the next one is due in 2010/11.
The water company in Melbourne had our flats back-to front. I live in an upstairs flat. For a long time one person (moi) lived upstairs and one downstairs. Then three people moved in downstairs. And on my next water bill suddenly I was taking six half-hour showers per day!
Took me a while to convince the water company it was their problem not mine.
Get this, finally when they sent somebody out it turned out that SIX of the ten flats were hooked up to the wrong meters!! True story.
I’ve had a similar experience with the power company, Bertus, only it worked in reverse for me. For about two or three years we were only getting charged for one electricity meter here when in fact we have nine!! I don’t know how it happened but when they finally caught up with their mistake they were only able to back charge us for one year – that’s in their charter. We came out about $10,000 ahead – lucky us.
Btw, I don’t know why your comment went into moderation – I’ll fix it. Cheers.
