Daylight Saving & WordPress

Posted in Uncategorized by Ray Dixon on 4 October, 2009

I’m testing this out to see if WordPress has adjusted the time it puts against comments made on Australian blogs after we turned our clocks forward last night. I hope I don’t have to adjust my own settings from “+10″ WordPress USA West Coast Time to “+11″ because whenever I do that it adds 1 hour to all previous comments. I won’t know the answer until I make a comment on my own post.

Note: Dave from Albury  does not need to worry about this, as he has recently changed to the El Budgeto WordPress template that does not have a timing feature – tightwad that he is. Besides, according to Dave, NSW are not doing daylight saving this year.

PS: I just noticed that WordPress saved the draft of this post at 10.55 am (I wrote it at 11.55am). It looks like I’ll have to adjust the settings thereby throwing out the time recorded against all previous comments.

UPDATE 7.41 pm AEDST: I just adjusted the settings to +11 WPress USA time and guess what? It didn’t alter the times on the previous comments! Them guys have done it.

I’ll leave the settings as they are for a while and adjust them later. (posted at 12.04pm AEDST)

My setting were still on Daylight savings time – now they’re good. I don’t think the time matters too much.

It does to us pedants, Wah. Think of the law suits:

“The time of the comment has been altered your honour. I submit that the evidence from the blog is inadmissable.”

I have found a daylight saving related annoyance – it messes up the sequence of articles in my RSS reader. Hopefully wordpress will sort it out.

The thing is Dave, that as soon as I change the settings to +11 WordPress time it will change the time on ALL comments before dayight saving cut in. I realise that you need to reset (like resetting a clock) but why can’t WordPress add a feature to the time setting that is specific to daylight saving adjustments and that does not alter the time of prior comments? It wouldn’t be hard.

And it’s not like they don’t have DST anywhere else. Have you had a look at the WP forums?

I just had a look but I couldn’t see any current topics on it. It might be worth starting one.
