The battle for Indi resumes

Mirabella challenged on climate change

Former Alpine councillor Zuvele Leschen, who once again will run as the ALP candidate for Indi at the next Federal election, wants her opponent Sophie Mirabella to “come clean” and outline her views on climate change following last night’s ABC’s ‘Four Corners’ show that revealed senior coalition figures as non-believers & sceptics on the worldwide issue of reducing carbon emissions.

According to her press release issued this morning, Zuvele is claiming that Sophie dodged this question during the last election campaign but can no longer escape this pressing issue:

“She declared on several occasions that she was happy to debate the issues but when it came to the crunch, she delegated the debate to a junior staffer.”

“I know the junior staffer’s views on climate change, but I don’t know Mrs Mirabella’s.”

“On this, the biggest issue facing the world at this moment, it is important that Mrs Mirabella is open and frank with the people who voted for her.”

“She can’t use the cover of cabinet solidarity, because that has already been broken by Liberals on last night’s program.”

“Leading up to Copenhagen, our local member should show some political courage and come clean on climate change.”

Comment:

There could be up to 12 months to go before the next election but it seems that Ms Leschen is starting early. I guess that’s because (a) She’s got a large margin to make up (about 9%), and (b) Ms Mirabella is actually quite vulnerable, given her unpopularity over other major issues such as the treatment of aborigines and the infamous abattoir-next-to-her-home that is yet to be built. It could get lively.

    Not really Ray,
The Libs could stand a steaming turd in Indi and it would still win.

Probably with a better margin than Sophie!
    Boom tish

It might be closer than you think next time BLL. Sophie has gone from about 69% to 59%, so she’s actually capable of losing the unloseable seat. Let’s hope so.

I think the Nats are a big chance to take Indi.

Orville, that would be a miracle since they can’t stand a candidate under the FEDERAL coalition agreement.

If Sophie quits they are free to run a candidate.

The only time the sitting liberal lost was back about 1923 – I think – when the incumbent failed to register in time.

    If Sophie quits…

Orville – Is there something you know that we don’t?

Greg – It will fall one day.
