Council to announce bushfire safer sites

Posted in Alpine Shire Council, Bright Australia by Ray Dixon on 18 December, 2009

The Alpine council is to (finally) announce four places of last resort at its meeting on Tuesday 22 December. It will also consider four draft Township Protection Plans, although they are still not finalised and are to be ’opened for community comment’. The four Neighbourhood Safer Places are:

Bright & Wandiligong: Pioneer Park, Bright – oval and pavilion
Harrietville: Harrietville Hall
Porepunkah: Porepunkah Hall and oval
Dederang: Dederang Recreation Reserve and Memorial Hall

Myrtleford & Mt Beauty missed out, as they are considered less at risk. The four towns above were declared by Regional CFA as the highest risk in the shire, although they are still not regarded as high risk on a State basis. The proposed sites have been assessed as meeting the CFA’s Neighbourhood Safer Places guidelines and criteria regarding radiant heat levels.

Safer Places for Myrtleford, Tawonga, Tawonga South and Mount Beauty will be considered next year.
