Code red catastrophic warning

Huge cake on its way!

PEOPLE along Australia’s east coast are being warned to stay away from Italian restaurants & bakeries this morning as a giant Tiramisu heads our way.

A Tiramisu is on its way from Chile

Update: The Tiramisu cake has failed to rise, it’s a flop.

No decision on Rosedale yet

I guess it is "too big" ~ for small minds. Click on image to enlarge.

How long until the council makes up its mind?

It looks like it will be April, at the earliest, before we know if the Alpine council is going to approve the modifications to a proposed 3-storey retail & accommodation building in the Bright CBD on the site of the former (burnt down) Rosedale guest house. The agenda for the council meeting of Tuesday 2nd March makes no mention of it - or much else for that matter. What exactly are they doing in there? (more…)

This one really counts

Why I think Lydia Lassila’s Olympic win was much more significant than Torah Bright’s:

1. The aerials are every bit the equivalent of 10-metre diving in the real Olympics, whereas snow-boarding is very much the equivalent of skate-boarding, which I hope never becomes an Olympic event.

2. Wasn’t it great for Lydia to stick it to those judges and the Chinese?

Anonymous defamer caught

Posted in Bright Australia by Ray Dixon on 25 February, 2010

LEGAL counsel Martin Bennett has a short message for those who allow themselves to attack reputations over the internet, imagining they are safe under the cloak of anonymity:

“You can be hunted down and found”

Mr Bennett has done just that for a Perth client, winning $30,000 in damages and costs, an apology, and undertakings from a Colac man that he won’t post any more defamatory comments. ~ The Age 25/2/10

This is bad news for those who go around the Internet anonymously slandering others and especially for those who set up anonymously authored copycat blogs specifically designed to defame & discredit their targets, like the locally-based one that WordPress closed down earlier this month for that very same reason. Next time (if there is one) I might give Mr Bennett a call instead.

The Aussie assassins

Posted in Uncategorized by Ray Dixon on 25 February, 2010

The Herald-Sun is on the hunt for the three Australians whose passports were used by Israeli assassins.

I’m not sure about the first two but I think the guy on the right (listed as Adam Korman) looks like Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson.

He should be arrested immediately.

No knives = no stabbings

Posted in law by Ray Dixon on 23 February, 2010

It might be a bit simplistic but surely the solution to the ever-increasing amount of stabbing attacks taking place in not just Melbourne, but also in regional areas like Wodonga, is to have a huge crackdown on anyone suspected of carrying such weapons and throw them in jail.

Seriously, if you are on the streets at night - or in a pub or club – and ‘packing a blade’, it’s not because you’re intending to go around to your grandmother’s place to help her chop the veges. You’re carrying it because you intend to use it to kill or seriously maim someone. Zero tolerance on the carrying of such weapons is the only way to go.

Gondola update

Posted in Alpine Shire Council, Bright Australia by Ray Dixon on 22 February, 2010

Sometimes it pays to “complain”. Following criticisms of their rather strange community consultation process, the task force investigating the proposed gondola @ Mt Buffalo has finally announced what seems to be a public forum. From their website:

“Open House” Information & Feed Back Session

Public open house session(s) will be held, probably in May 2010. Exact date/venue to be confirmed closer to the date.

Well, at least it seems they’re responding.

The latest in cycling

Posted in Bright Australia by Ray Dixon on 22 February, 2010

One of the benefits of living on the Great Alpine Road at the very entrance to the town is that NO ONE gets into Bright without your knowledge. Now, I’ve seen plenty of tandem (normal) upright bikes go by, and plenty of recumbent (i.e. reclining) bikes too. And I’ve even seen people on tandem recumbents, which is a real hoot. But I’ve never seen this before. I give you: (more…)

Albury hotel bombed

Posted in Alpine Shire Council, Bright Australia by Ray Dixon on 22 February, 2010

The news  that a molotov cocktail was thrown at the 5-storey (heritage listed) art-deco New Albury Hotel should serve as a warning to all local residents.

The Alpine council had better not go ahead and approve that contemporary, architect designed, 3-storey building in the Bright CBD on the old Rosedale guest house site.

What more proof do we need that we should reject all large building proposals regardless of their architectural merit?

They are magnets for terrorists.

And we just don’t know what Save Bright will do next!

Council planning manager on record as saying:

“Woolworths plan complies”

While we await the outcome of last week’s 3-day VCAT hearing in which the Alpine council has claimed that the Woolworths supermarket in Bright does not comply with the planning permit issued by council & VCAT,  it’s more than a little interesting to read this ABC Online news report of 29 April 2009  in which the council’s planning manager, Heather Green, is clearly quoted as endorsing Woolworths’ revised plans(more…)

St Kilda 100 Collingwood 99

Posted in AFL footy by Ray Dixon on 20 February, 2010

It’s always great to beat Collingwood and it doesn’t matter how you do it. But last night St Kilda found a new way to inflict ultimate pain on the side we love to hate in the first round of the pre-season NAB Cup. After getting out to a 43 point lead half way through the 3rd quarter the Saints ‘went to sleep’ allowing Collingwood to come storming back into the game snatching the lead with just minutes left to play … only to have the Saints snatch it back again (with just 30 seconds left on the clock!) to win by the narrowest of margins, just one point. Sheer joy & bliss. Well done Saints. Have a nice trip to Alice Springs, Collingwood.

Did the rest fall over again?

Who?

Even though we’ve never heard of her before, and even though she talks with an American accent, I think we owe the Australian Winter Olympics flag-bearer a big thank you for putting the town of Bright on the map. Let’s give her a free holiday in one of our stylish caravan parks (in winter of course).

Council goes back to VCAT

While Woolies pushes ahead

Work on the LOW PROFILE Woolworths supermarket & specialty shops development in Bright is nearing completion. It makes you wonder what all the fuss has been about ~ click on image to enlarge.

A 3-day hearing into the alleged wall-height discrepancies of the Woolworths supermarket development in Bright commences today at VCAT in Melbourne. This futile exercise and waste of ratepayers’ money came about mainly due to the carping and carry on of Save Bright ‘crusaders’ Nick Malkin & Lee Rosser. (more…)
