Mt Buffalo saved?

The proposed "Mildura Jewel" casino. It ain't exactly pretty (click on image to enlarge).

Mildura to get ‘our’ casino

The anti gondola-on-Mt Buffalo protesters may have won the war before it has even started. The news that Mildura is proposing Victoria’s second casino, a $300-$400 million conference & convention centre on the banks of the Murray River, might mean there is no possibility of any viable redevelopment of Mt Buffalo and its historic chalet in the forseeable future. Oh, you didn’t realise that a casino was mooted for our mountain? Shhh, it’s a secret.

Anyway, they’re welcome to it.

At least it is not high rise – it might have fitted in well in bright.

The rumour mill has been suggesting for years that it would likely be at Mt. Hotham and with James Packer being the new owner up there, and his well known interest in casinos, it may well have been a possibility. Could James have been “trumped” or are the rumours unfounded? Time will tell but it sure looks like the end of another option for Buffalo. DSE and Ronnie Beauchamp could explore the possibility of re-establishing downhill skiing as an affordable sport for the average punter up there as Falls Creek and Hotham Resort management are pricing the average family man out of it with their planned sacale of entry fees for this year which favour the well heeled “on mountain” skier over the valley based day tripper. This will impact on our valley based accommodation industry during the coming winter.

The last thing that Victoria needs is another Casino.

And what is it with building them on the side of rivers?

If anything we should be trying to close the one down beside the Yarra.
