AFL round 6 ‘expert’ tips

Posted in AFL footy by Ray Dixon on 30 April, 2010

Update: All ‘expert’ tips are finally in. Make sure you read Baldrick’s.

What is the point of Rivalry Round?

It beats me why the AFL persists with the stupid idea of giving certain rounds names like Rivalry Round. What is the point and what do they hope to achieve? Anyway, this is the so-called Rivalry Round and here are the ‘expert’ tips. Last week’s results and year-to-date in brackets:

Ray (4) (26)

Bulldogs v St Kilda: Everyone is writing off the Riewoldtless Sainters, but I will stick with them for now. It needs a big one from Kosi and, for Christ’s sake , will someone please keep Barry Hall quiet?

Nth Melbourne v Melbourne:  And everyone is jumping on the Dees bandwagon. But watch them jump off if they blow this game – and I reckon it’s a toss-up here.

Adelaide v Pt Adelaide: The Crows embarrassing season-from-hell is about to get worse. They have no hope.

Essendon v Hawthorn: The Bombers very public unravelling raises two questions: (1) Why did they give the coaching job to someone who has never played in a successful side? (2) Why did they get rid of Matthew Lloyd?

Sydney v Brisbane: You know, it’s possible I haven’t picked a winner in these selections so far. And this game does not make it any easier.

Geelong v Richmond: It just got easier. A no-brainer, unless Geelong is still trying to raise money for ‘The Gary Ablett Fund’ and fancies taking the $12 odds on Richmond like they did last week against Carlton. How else did they lose that?

Carlton v Collingwood: They should wear the same jumpers. It’s hard to tell the sh*t from the clay anyway.

West Coast v Fremantle: Freo’s run has to end soon and these games usually produce a boil over – and a brawl.

Baldrick (4) (27)

Sending this from the car park at Woolies, just about to go in and buy me Tallyho rollies, Winnie Blues and get a slab of the cheapest bourbon. Got to hurry as I need to nick down for Carl William’s funeral.

Footscray
Nth.Melbourne
Both these teams because if it is good enough for Franco Cozzo, it’s good enough for me

Pt. Adelaide
Hawthorn (not because I like em, but because at some point in the season, they have to put in a decent game, either that, or the drugs will kick in)
Sydney
( will be competitive but they are one good team and better balanced than Brisbane)
Geelong
(just , we’re in a state of disarray)
Collingwood (because they need to live with the consequences of losing to their arch enemy)
Fremantle (anchors away)

Here endeth the epistle

.

Greg (4) (29)

Geez … this week is the hardest so far.

I’ll pick:

  • St Kilda
  • North Melbourne
  • Port Adelaide
  • Hawthorn
  • Sydney
  • Geelong
  • Collingwood
  • Fremantle

from your expert picker Greg

.

Rox (3) (25)

Here are my “tips” for Round 5

Dogs, Demons, Port A, Bombers, Swans, Cats, Magpies, Freo (groan), .

A hard round to pick – a couple of good matchups in Sydney/Brisbane, Blues/Pies, Footerscray/Saints.

And since I detest all SA and WA teams (sorry JR) I’m not really interested, but I would like to claw back a bit of cred.

I’ll be away this weekend, so my blushes will be spared till Sunday night.

    Crows are due this week…..

I think you’ll still be saying that after round 21.

Oh, Geelong are definitely going to put money on Richmond and lay down again. Ablett has pulled out of the game.

There is a saying: “Snatching victory from the jaws of the defeat”.

If you don’t know what it means watch the last 10 minutes of tonight’s game – Saints by 3.

    Here we go again.

    Greg: 4/5
    Ray, Rox & Baldrick: 3/5

    The man is unstoppable.

I refuse to watch Carlton v Collingwood. The Geelong v Richmond game on Austar is much more entertaining – if you like watching training drills. Quarter time: Geelong 7 goals, Richmond zip.

Oh, Richmond just got the first goal of the 2nd quarter. It’s a comeback.

Geelong 95, Richmond 17 … and it’s only early in the 3rd quarter.

I can’t wait for next week’s Adelaide v Richmond game. It’s just wrong that one of them will register a win.

Geelong v Sydney next week should be interesting, although Geelong gets the massive advantage of playing down @ Geelong, which doesn’t seem right.

This is likeTwitter. I’m just talking to myself here.

I’m back! And though I snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on Friday night, at least I tipped the Bombers.

    Pity about the Dees.

  11. Ray Dixon said, on 2 May, 2010 at 3:43 pm

In hindsight, Rox, they are only Melbourne and it should have been obvious to all of us they couldn’t win 4 in a row.

  12. Rox said, on 2 May, 2010 at 3:50 pm

    I tipped in hope Ray.

Back from the Melbourne Jazz Festival and missed the Autumn Festival, I hear it went on despite my absence. No big upsets in the footy. Saints did pinch that match and Footscray will be dirty about that.

Not sure if I got on the news broadcasts on the tele for the funeral, no one told me we had to dress up, felt a bit out of place in my Adidas trackies and moccies, but at least they were black.

    Is the coffin still underground?

  15. Ray Dixon said, on 2 May, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Did you talk to Roberta? And could you understand her?

  16. Ray Dixon said, on 3 May, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Oh, I just did the round six tipping results:

    Greg: 7
    Rox & Baldrick: 6
    Ray: 5

    Bloody hell.

  17. Ray Dixon said, on 3 May, 2010 at 2:57 pm

    Year to date:

    Greg: 36
    Baldrick: 33
    Rox & Ray: 31

Okay, it’s time to get serious.
