AFL round 13 ‘expert’ tips (part 1)

Posted in AFL footy by Ray Dixon on 18 June, 2010

It’s D*ckhead Round

Just when it looked liked I’d have no lead story as an intro to this week’s tips, along comes this loathsome creature from the past, rising like some prehistoric knuckle-grazer from the murky swamps of a bygone era where footballers told racist jokes about “abos” and got away with it – Mal Brown.

Mal who? Well may you ask.

This neanderthal played in Western Australia in the 60s & 70s but was never good enough to make it in the VFL playing just 14 games for Richmond in 1974 before being sent home in disgrace. Who the hell is this moron to make racist remarks about the likes of the great Nicky Winmar who, unlike Brown, could actually play a bit? “Cannibals”, eh? Bloody hilarious. Brown looks like he’s eaten more than his share of the human race and then some. Fat guts, fat head and fat for brains. Go back to the swamp.

That feels better! Here are the ‘expert’ tips for part 1 of round 13 with last week’s results … etc:

Ray (6) (60)

Hawthorn v Essendon: I’m going on form here but bloody Essendon are just as likely to come out and win this.

Carlton v Fremantle: This will sort out which of these two is the pretender. I think it’s Carlton.

Brisbane v Richmond: Brisbane has Fevola but Richmond has the AFL’s new superstar, Jack Riewoldt. No contest. Great to see a player lifting the entire spirit of a club that has been down for so long – he reminds me a bit of Tony Lockett (a smaller version).

Nth Melbourne v Port Adelaide: By default. Port can’t afford the airfare.

West Coast v Footscray: It’s hard to see the Eagles winning another game this year.

.

Baldrick (4) (63)

Greetings Raymond,

HAWTHORN v Essendon: This could be close and then again it might not be.

CARLTON v Fremantle: I’ve had it tipping for Freo. Way to go, my derriere. O’Halpin out, a bigger loss than Carlton realise. Need to keep the Pav quiet.

BRISBANE v Richmond: I like Brisbane’s style, they have lost the last two matches so they don’t change the side.

NTH.MELBOURNE v Pt.Adelaide: Roos finding some form and winning matches. Should be a sell out. Do I have any idea what I’m talking about? Rhetorical question that.

West Coast v FOOTSCRAY: Brad Johnson back. I want them to win, so they will.

.

Greg (6) (64)

Hawthorn to beat Essendon
Carlton to beat Fremantle
Brisbane Lions to beat Richmond
North Melbourne to beat Adelaide
• West Coast to lose to Western Bulldogs

.

Rox (5) (58)

Everyone seems to think this is a done deal as far as tipping is concerned.

But I have an uneasy feeling that someone will cause an upset. It had better not be Fremantle.

Hawks to beat the Bombers: I know everyone’s tipping this, but I’m not really sure. Dustin Fletcher is great for the Dons, but Rioli, Franklin and Hodge are going well and the team is in form.

Lions to beat the Tigers: As above. I wonder when/if the expectation will get to Riewoldt. I would love to see Richmond win this, but it’s a huge ask and I’m not risking it.

Blues to beat the Dockers, i.e., Fremantle: I still think Port should be called the Dockers. It’s very confusing. Anyway, I hope Freo loses. Upstarts.

North Melbourne to beat Port Adelaide: Do I really care? No. The point would be good though.

FOOTERSCRAY to beat the Turkeys, aka the Eagles: Everyone’s tipping this too and I hope we’re all correct.

Ray, a lot of very good footy players never played VFL. I know that’s hard to understand, but it’s true. Other than that I agree with your comments.

    Crows won’t lose this weekend…..

  2. Ray Dixon said, on 18 June, 2010 at 2:03 pm

I know it’s true, JB. But Brown did try and he flopped. He also couldn’t control himself and was suspended for punching … and for throwing the ball at an umpire.

  3. JB said, on 18 June, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Flopped yes, but his best years were behind him. Anyway. He’s a tosser. How anyone can think that such comments are “funny” in this day and age is beyond beleif.

Of course no one seems to have told Dippa according to the lastest press.

    Unbeleivable.

  4. Ray Dixon said, on 18 June, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Oh, and as for “a lot of very good footy players never played VFL” – stop talking about me!

  5. Ray Dixon said, on 18 June, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Well at least the AFL can sanction Dipper, and they have – He’s been sacked as an Auskick ambassador. Bur Brown gets off scot free because he’s not really part of the AFL anyway in my opinion.

  6. JB said, on 18 June, 2010 at 2:17 pm

    Ha!

  7. Ray Dixon said, on 18 June, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Stop laughing at me. I once kicked 5 goals in a quarter!

  8. JB said, on 18 June, 2010 at 2:33 pm

    Very selfish play Ray…..

  9. Ray Dixon said, on 18 June, 2010 at 3:17 pm

    They would have missed.

  10. Rox said, on 18 June, 2010 at 3:19 pm

    Very selfish play Ray…..

    hahahahaa! You can’t win.

I was surprised by Mal Brown. He used to seem like a decent enough bloke, but people like him and Dipper are from a generation that never really came to grips, or probably never even had to, with the notion that comments like that are racist.

They’re dinosaurs, but I don’t think they’re really racist, just behind the times. Having said that, they should watch what they say. But I did laugh when they asked Mal how he’d change his behaviour, and he said “no more charity work, they can all get stuffed”.

  11. Ray Dixon said, on 18 June, 2010 at 3:39 pm

Racism is a mind set and I don’t see how the words get from the mind to the mouth unless that mind is set.

  12. Ray Dixon said, on 18 June, 2010 at 3:48 pm

I’ll try to explain what I mean a bit better: When someone like Brown makes jokes about “abos” it indicates that even though he might not be a hater, he is quite comfortable with keeping them in a disadvantaged and inferior position in society and as the butt of his crass jokes. It is this kind of stereotyping that reinforces to aborigines that they are not really accepted as equal. Brown is not only “behind the times”, he wants things to stay that way.

  13. JB said, on 18 June, 2010 at 3:58 pm

I agree with that. As for Mal’s comments of “no more charity work….”, well isn’t that mature…

  14. Rox said, on 18 June, 2010 at 5:09 pm

I suspect he didn’t mean it. And the mindset will gradually disappear, but not among this lot. It’s too ingrained.

  15. Rox said, on 18 June, 2010 at 5:28 pm

    http://www.crikey.com.au/2010/06/18/good-blokes-or-not-lets-call-sporting-racists-what-they-really-are/

And here you go. I can’t excuse the “good blokes” of footy when I despise the racists of rugby (league).

  16. Ray Dixon said, on 18 June, 2010 at 6:51 pm

The problem is, Rox, that the mindset of old dinosaurs like Brown gets passed down to younger people as acceptable. What should happen (in my opinion) is that the AFL should say to Brown, “we not only condemn your comments but you are hereby stripped of all AFL honours and disinvited from all future AFL sanctioned events”.

  17. Baldrick said, on 18 June, 2010 at 7:29 pm

I’m with Raymond on this one. Zero tolerance. Make a strong note to everyone.

If they want to atone for their sins, make them work for it. Send them out on charity and education sessions, no payment for performing. They’re either fair dinkum about being sorry or they’re not. The media has a role to play here too. Ostracise behaviour like this.

I watched a part of the Brown retraction last night and saw the look on the journalists who were cacking themselves with laughter. What message does this project to the world?

  18. Ray Dixon said, on 18 June, 2010 at 8:02 pm

Unfortunately, Baldrick, the AFL can’t take any disciplinary action against Brown because he holds no official AFL post, unlike Dipper. I have tried to make the point here (and elsewhere) that Brown is not actually indicative of AFL culture because he only played 14 games over here and is in fact more representative of the views in the wild west.

Then along came Dipper to blow that theory.

However, they could remove Brown from the Hall of Fame (if he’s there and God knows why) and put him on the outer in future.

Btw, I’ve put your tips up. Btw #2, Freo are certainties against an over-rated Carlton.

  19. Rox said, on 19 June, 2010 at 3:09 pm

Where’s all the footy? No game this arvo?

  20. Ray Dixon said, on 19 June, 2010 at 3:59 pm

No, they’re all at night. The AFL wants to give the world cup a free kick. Not so in the USA – they’re playing the US golf open while the soccer is on. And England is starting Wimbledon on Monday. I guess that’s because neither the US or England expect to go through to the 2nd round.

  21. Ray Dixon said, on 19 June, 2010 at 10:29 pm

Great win by Richmond. Freo was a cert over Carlton too (why didn’t the rest of you pick it?). Results so far:

    Ray: 3/3
    The rest: 1/3

  22. Rox said, on 20 June, 2010 at 10:21 am

    Sh*t.

Good on you Ray. Good on Richmond. Who’da thunk?

  23. Ray Dixon said, on 20 June, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Rd 13 (part 1) results, from 5 games:

    Ray: 5 (65)
    Baldrick: 3 (66)
    Greg: 3 (67)
    Rox: 3 (61)

    It’s ‘catchy up’ time!

  24. Ray Dixon said, on 21 June, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Uh, oh, it looks like there’s a campaign to undermine St Kilda ahead of the big game. Why drag this up 6 years later?:

  25. Baldrick said, on 21 June, 2010 at 7:48 pm

Orchestrated by St.Kilda to lift them as a unit before the game. Dirty tactics.

  26. Ray Dixon said, on 21 June, 2010 at 9:19 pm

I smell a rat with this. Why is this cop coming out with these allegations now? A book maybe?

  27. Rox said, on 24 June, 2010 at 5:53 pm

    My tips are in.
