World Cup Round 2 Tipping

Posted in world cup soccer by Ray Dixon on 26 June, 2010

Here are the 8 games to be played in Rd 2 (starting from tonight, I think).

We still need Baldrick to explain how this is going to work in the event a game goes to a penalty shoot out *:

Uruguay vs South Korea
United States vs Ghana
Germany vs England
Argentina vs Mexico
Netherlands vs Slovakia
Brazil v Chile
Paraguay v Japan
Spain v Portugal

* As Baldrick couldn’t be bothered working it out (or as he didn’t know how), this is the scoring system to be applied hereafter, devised by yours truly and approved of (begrudgingly) by Baldy:

When there is a clear result after full time:

Same scoring system as Rd 1 (3pts for exact score, 1 pt if you just get the winner but not the right score, 0 pts if you pick a draw)

When there is a draw after full time but a clear result after extra time:

1. If you have picked the winner & the exact FINAL score – 3pts.
2. If you pick the winner but NOT the exact FINAL score – 1pt
3. If you picked a draw – 0 pts

When there is a draw after extra time and it goes to a penalty shoot out:

NOTE: The winner of the shoot out is deemed to have scored ONE extra goal. So if you pick AAA 2 BBB 1 and after extra time the score is 1-1 but AAA wins the shoot out, the final score is AAA 2 BBB 1.

1. If you pick the winner and the exact final score – 3 pts
2. If you pick the winner but not the exact final score – 1pt
3. If you pick a draw (*) AND the exact score after extra time AND the eventual winner of the shoot out – 3 pts.
4. If you pick a draw AND the exact score after extra time BUT NOT the eventual winner – 1pt.
4. If you pick a draw AND the eventual winner BUT NOT the exact score after extra time – 1 pt.
5. If you pick a draw BUT NOT the exact score after extra time AND NOT the eventual winner – 0 pts.

(* When you pick a draw you must also nominate the eventual winner of the shoot out)

If we include penalty shootouts, tippings draws are out of the question. You have to tip a winner and then a margin. Bear in mind that you could have a large score inclusive of penalties.

Hence Uruguay v Sth.Korea would go to penalties after a draw after regulation injury time and injury time and extra time. Eg. it could be 2-2. Then shootout. I don’t know what the score could be at the end of the shootout. Does someone want to look into this, I couldn’t be bothered.

Another way of doing this is to take whatever the score is immediately prior to penalties. And that can include draws. And it is simpler in a sense, maybe .I hate penalties anyway, a cruel and vicious way of tie breaking. I say keep playing unti there is a score.

    Over to you lot

I agree with my Baldish mate. When do they have to be in by?

  3. Baldrick said, on 26 June, 2010 at 1:29 pm

Whichever system we decide upon, let’s make it 10pm. Not sure what Raj is up to, he’s been flying under the radar for a fair while. Maybe Raymond can make some contact with him.

  4. Baldrick said, on 26 June, 2010 at 1:30 pm

And of course it opens it up to the thousands of lurkers out there who have hung on our every word. Fresh competition allows them to show their mettle.

Although I hasten to say they are limited edition fridge magnets and may have been limited production.

  6. Ray Dixon said, on 26 June, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Agree with what, Rox? He’s as clear as mud. Here’s my take on it:

When there is a clear result after full time: Same scoring system as Rd 1 (3pts for exact score, 1 pt if you just get the winner but not the right score)

NOTE: The winner of the shoot out is regarded as having scored ONE extra goal. So if you pick AAA team 2 BBB team 1 and after extra time the score is 1-1 but AAA wins the shoot out, the final score is regarded as 2-1.

    Discuss.

  7. Ray Dixon said, on 26 June, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Btw, I just noticed in your first comment above, Baldrick, your reference to the “winning margin”.

I thought you only got 3 pts if you picked the exact score? I.E. if you pick 3-1 and it’s 4-2 (same margin) you only get 1 pt.

But you seem to be saying it’s only the margin that matters not the exact scoreline.

Which is it? And which rule applied in Rd 1? (Do we need a review of the results?)

  8. Rox said, on 26 June, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Another way of doing this is to take whatever the score is immediately prior to penalties. And that can include draws.

    Agreed with that bit.

How long does extra time go for before there’s a shootout?

  9. Ray Dixon said, on 26 June, 2010 at 2:59 pm

I don’t agree with that because it means you will get no points for correctly forecasting the eventual winner from a shoot out. Seems wrong.

  10. Baldrick said, on 26 June, 2010 at 3:00 pm

What Rox just indicated above. I am saying you take the score immediately before going to penalties, so, if Uruguay and Sth.Korea end up 2-2 after regulation time, injury time and extra time, then they will be forced to penalties.

I was suggesting that we take that 2-2 as the result. Of course it isn’t the eventual winner, but that’s neither here nor there for me.

Margin was the wrong word Raymond, I meant result. Correct about the scoring process to date. So, again, if you pick 2-2 in the above game, you would score 3 points. If it ended 1-1 for example, you get one point. The penalties would be ignored for the purpose of our competition.

  11. Baldrick said, on 26 June, 2010 at 3:05 pm

Suggest something and I will accept it, I’m not fussed.

  12. Ray Dixon said, on 26 June, 2010 at 3:07 pm

It’s just wrong to award three points for picking the wrong result and 0 pts for picking the right one.

Why don’t we just say the winner of a shoot out is deemed to have scored an extra goal, as I’ve suggested above?

And you also get the 3 pts for picking the exact draw score after extra time PROVIDED you correctly nominate the eventual winner. Seems fairer to me.

  13. Ray Dixon said, on 26 June, 2010 at 3:08 pm

It looks like you need to scroll up and see my earlier suggestion.

  14. Baldrick said, on 26 June, 2010 at 3:13 pm

    Yep, fine by me.

  15. Ray Dixon said, on 26 June, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Is that all you’ve got to say after my brilliant, out-of-left-field & Phd-worthy thesis?

At the very least you could award me a gold star and bow to superior logic and analytical abilities. Not to mention my inate fairness.

I bet you didn’t even vote for me at the election!

  16. Ray Dixon said, on 26 June, 2010 at 3:18 pm

Anyway, it’s yours to administer. Good luck with the ‘marking’. It’s bound to give you headaches and keep you up all night. Serves you right.

(I’ll engross the system into the post)

  17. Baldrick said, on 26 June, 2010 at 3:29 pm

You’ll never know who I voted in the election. But it is obvious where my political leanings are.

As for the system, it is good, and I couldn’t be stuffed about the machinations, I don’t do fantasy footy etc, too much farting around thinking.

In relation to the marking, it is inevitable I will stuff up, so will expect you to correct it. Better still is if you take this part of it over. On the other hand, having a larf at how inept I am at this might be entertainment in itself.

    Well, I’ll go first:

Uruguay 2 vs South Korea 1
United States 1 vs Ghana 1 (with USA winning the shoot out)
    Germany 2 vs England 1
    Argentina 2 vs Mexico 0
    Netherlands 3 vs Slovakia 1
    Brazil 2 v Chile 1
    Paraguay 2 v Japan 0
Spain 1 v Portugal 1 (with Spain winning the shoot out)

Spain 2 v Portugal 2 (Soain winning shootout)

  22. Ray Dixon said, on 26 June, 2010 at 5:00 pm

New rule, you can’t tip draws

What do you mean, and why? I’m guessing you mean my system means you can’t pick a draw because you have to nominate the eventual winner of the shootouts. Well, doesn’t that better resemble the reality that there are no draws from here on in?

  23. Baldrick said, on 26 June, 2010 at 5:03 pm

    Lighten up, was just kidding.
We go with your system, it’s fine.
    Tips are in.

Well done, Rox. Don’t forget to collect your GG voucher.

Btw, I emailed Raja earlier today but no response yet. I could just go to his blog and transpose his tips from there but what say you two? I think that unless it’s voluntary he’s not in.

  27. Rox said, on 26 June, 2010 at 6:50 pm

He a big boy. Not your responsibility, but up to you Ray.

    What’s a GG voucher?

Voucher = “Pay for 2 nights get the 3rd night free”.

  31. Ray Dixon said, on 27 June, 2010 at 9:25 am

So if Oz had got through to the final 16 we’d have played (and beaten) USA.

Then we’d play (and beat) Uruguay (we’ve done it before)

Then we’d be in the semi finals, one step away from the big one.

It just shows you how much that first game against Germany hurt us. We could have gone all the way to the last 4, at least.

  34. Ray Dixon said, on 28 June, 2010 at 12:58 am

Oh my God. How did the linesman not see that England’s ball was nearly a metre over the line? How did the main referee not see it? Why wouldn’t they use video replays? Goals are so hard to score. Half time and it’s 2 – 1 Germany but morally (and legally) it’s 2 – 2. England deserve to win this now.

  35. Baldrick said, on 28 June, 2010 at 1:21 am

    Good decision that

  36. Baldrick said, on 28 June, 2010 at 1:30 am

    Now a shellacking.

  37. Ray Dixon said, on 28 June, 2010 at 1:32 am

It’s another German ‘blitz’. Should be 4 – 2 but that’s a moot point now.

  38. Baldrick said, on 28 June, 2010 at 1:54 am

Yep. Vastly superior for most of the match. A deserved win despite the stuff-up from the refs.

So much is made of the English because of saturation television of the English Premier League. The reality is that most of the best players in England are not English.

A reality check for the Poms. What’s the bet they don’t acknowledge German’s dominance, simply moan about the disallowed goal.

  39. Ray Dixon said, on 28 June, 2010 at 2:00 am

It should have been adjusted to 2 – 2 at half time and surely this will lead to video replays at the next world cup. But England dropped their bundle in the second half as soon as Germany scored their 3rd. and they didn’t look like scoring again (a bit like Geelong!). How does that Wayne Rooney get a game? He looks overweight, slow, useless & disinterested. Germany might go all the way although they”ll most likely face Argentina next and that’s their biggest hurdle.

  40. Baldrick said, on 28 June, 2010 at 2:11 am

Argentiina would have slaughtered England. At least Germany will be a worthy adversary. Rooney has been crap all tournament, they then bring on Heskey the donkey. England, clueless.

  43. Ray Dixon said, on 28 June, 2010 at 10:25 am

    What are you celebrating, Rox?

  44. Ray Dixon said, on 28 June, 2010 at 1:06 pm

FIFA is just fortunate that the margin in last night’s Germany/England game was 3 goals. If it had been one goal then the disallowed England goal (which was visible to everyone except the referees) would be grounds for protest and a rematch in my opinion.

It’s a blight on what is supposed to be the world’s premier sporting event, or at least the premier team sport event. The World Cup is every bit as anticipated & followed as the Olympics are but to have such an important knock out game potentially determined by something like this makes a mockery of the so-called ‘beautiful game’.

And it’s not the only area that needs to be fixed before 2014 if soccer is to continue to hold its most popular and esteemed position.

Look at the ridiculous and inconsistent red card decisions and the sending off of players awarded one. In what other sport are teams so disadvantaged by what may (in the end) be a wrongly interpreted breach of the playing rules?

Why don’t they just send the offending player off, allow him to be replaced and then deal with the matter after the game? The whole team should not be handicapped and hamstrung by the questionable tackle of one player.

It’s a ridiculous rule and it opens the game up to accusations of referee favouritism and bias. Look what it did to Oz in the Ghana game – it cost us a place in the last 16, no doubt about that.

My rant is over. I really enjoy the World Cup but these incidents bring it down and make the end result and so-called world championship a joke.

  45. Rox said, on 28 June, 2010 at 1:26 pm

I was celebrating prematurely, as it turned out. I tipped Argentina 3-0 over Mexico, but they went and scored and spoiled it!

  49. Ray Dixon said, on 28 June, 2010 at 2:16 pm

    I blame Craig Johnston’s ponytail.

  50. Baldrick said, on 28 June, 2010 at 2:19 pm

See, told you it was a dud attempt at goal. Lampard should be at least yellow carded for his histrionics.

Agree with your post regarding the farcical nature of what’s been going on. Not sure what the solution is, your idea could work. There are only a limited number of subs, so once they’ve been used, then the team can be penalised by being a player short, unless of course you change that rule too.

I suspect big questions will be asked of FIFA, and rightfully so. Time to clean this mess up.

  51. Baldrick said, on 28 June, 2010 at 2:20 pm

You reckon Johnston wears pirate pants too?

  52. Ray Dixon said, on 28 June, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Huh? There are surely enough subs to cover the one or two players per game who might get red carded & sent off.

Anyway, soccer is not the only game that could use some better rules & technology. Look at that Geelong ‘goal’ that hit the post in last year’s GF. And our free-for-all on rotations is just ridiculous.

As for Craig Johnston, I reckon he’s so obnoxious that’s why Les & the other Craig (Foster) got rid of him. I don’t think he wears pirate pants, though. Beneath that desk I reckon he was in his jocks.

Bloody penalties. Can you check that through your system please Raymond.

  57. Ray Dixon said, on 30 June, 2010 at 9:18 am

You got it right for Rox and for me but you dudded yourself with the Paraguay/Japan result.

From the rules: “The winner of the shoot out is deemed to have scored ONE extra goal”. … “1. If you pick the winner and the exact final score – 3 pts”

Under the rules Paraguay is deemed to have won the game 1 – 0 *, which is as you predicted. Therefore you get 3 pts. I will adjust the score.

    * But Rox still gets 3 pts as she predicted a draw, the exact score after extra time AND she nominated Paraguay as the winner of the shoot out. In effect you both said “Paraguay will win by one goal to none”.

  58. Baldrick said, on 30 June, 2010 at 10:15 am

    Cheers.

  59. Ray Dixon said, on 30 June, 2010 at 10:20 am

The system works! And it’s fair. If Japan had won the shoot out, Rox would have got one pt for accurately predicting the exact drawn score after extra time, and you would have got zero for picking incorrectly.

Bloody hell, I did not watch the Uruguay/Ghana game but what bloody cheats Uruguay were. I can’t believe this. It makes (another) joke of the world cup, that a team could get through to the semis by deliberately handballing on the line in the dying minute to keep out a certain goal and take the risk on the resulting penalty, which missed.

My verdict: INSTANT DISQUALIFICATION – MATCH AWARDED TO GHANA

Until FIFA fixes this sort of thing (like hey, why don’t you have a disqualification rule?) they will never be taken seriously outside Europe & Sth America.

    http://www.theage.com.au/world-cup-2010/world-cup-news/i-am-the-new-hand-of-god-suarez-20100703-zuo5.html

And to think: Australia should have been playing them, not Ghana.

(Oh yeah, and if Uruguay had not cheated Rox would have got 3 pts and me 1. It was okay after all)

  82. Rox said, on 3 July, 2010 at 5:28 pm

I tipped Ghana as an upset, so I’m not real happy about that.

  83. Ray Dixon said, on 3 July, 2010 at 7:59 pm

    Well, they got their “UPSET”.

    What a farce, eh?

  84. Baldrick said, on 4 July, 2010 at 1:54 am

Eins, zwei, drei, vier Schlaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnndddddddd !!!!

  85. Ray Dixon said, on 4 July, 2010 at 2:02 am

    BLOODY HELL.

    Nothing stopping them now.

I better go to bed. Going to Melbourne tomorrow to see the Saints win by 40 goals to nil.

    (talk Engrish)

  86. Baldrick said, on 4 July, 2010 at 10:04 am

    Overngiht results:

    Germany v Argentina 4-0
    Spain v Paraguay 1-0

    Points update:
    Rox 1 point to 13
    Ray 1 point to 12
    Bald 1 point to 10

I don’t mind being this wrong.

    Now Germany v Spain

  87. Rox said, on 4 July, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Good grief!! At least it makes us look a bit better losing to Germany 0-4. I suppose that make them favourites.

  88. Baldrick said, on 4 July, 2010 at 5:33 pm

They played brilliantly Rox, but Spain is yet to hit its straps. Netherlands are a very competent side as well, but by virtue of the thrashings meted out by the Germans to Oz, England and now the Argentinians, I suppose yes.

  89. Rox said, on 4 July, 2010 at 6:08 pm

Would you say Spain can hit its straps at the right time?

  90. Baldrick said, on 4 July, 2010 at 6:15 pm

Perhaps, they are firmer favourites than the Dutch and the Germans, but as you would have seen, seedings and reputations stand for nothing. Big scalps have been taken, and the Spaniards haven’t had any emphatic victories to date.

I am really hoping for a repeat of the 1974 epic between long term rivals and neighbours, the Netherlands and Germany.

  91. Ray Dixon said, on 5 July, 2010 at 11:28 pm

It’s a foregone conclusion, Baldrick. And Germany will win.

  92. Rox said, on 6 July, 2010 at 9:39 am

    When are our tips due?

  93. Ray Dixon said, on 6 July, 2010 at 9:47 am

The semis start on Wednesday night, Rox.

    Germany v Spain
    Netherlands v Uruguay

    I will go:
    Germany 2 Spain 1
    Netherlands 2 Uruguay 0

  94. Baldrick said, on 6 July, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Was going to go exactly the same as Raymond, but won’t:

    Netherlands v Uruguay 3-1
Germany v Spain 2-2 (Germany on penalties)

  95. Ray Dixon said, on 7 July, 2010 at 12:13 am

Woops, I made a mistake. The first semi is @ 4 am Wednesday, 4 hours from now. I’ve sent Rox an email – hope she’s still up!

(Baldrick, this is your fault – it’s your comp!)

  96. Rox said, on 7 July, 2010 at 6:15 am

    No I wasn’t still up. :(

  97. Rox said, on 7 July, 2010 at 6:17 am

Looks like you’re going to do it Baldrick.

    Oh well, I’ll tip

Germany 1, Spain 1, Germany on shootout.

  98. Ray Dixon said, on 7 July, 2010 at 10:20 am

I don’t know the other result yet, Rox, so give us your tip anyway.

  99. Ray Dixon said, on 7 July, 2010 at 10:36 am

I know the result now. I think Rox would have picked Netherlands to beat Uruguay (as they did) so I suggest we award 1 pt each.

  100. Ray Dixon said, on 7 July, 2010 at 10:52 am

I’m just surprised the Uruguayans didn’t all stand on the goal line and handball the Dutch goal shots away.

  101. Rox said, on 7 July, 2010 at 11:38 am

I would have tipped the Netherlands, but it was my fault I got the day wrong, so I don’t really deserve the point.

  102. Ray Dixon said, on 7 July, 2010 at 11:43 am

No, I gave you the wrong time (see above) and of course you would have picked Netherlands. I mean, the cheating Uruguay didn’t even deserve to be there and the Dutch had to be the biggest certainty in world cup history. Surprising that the score was so close (3-2). I don’t think anyone would have picked the exact score so it’s 1 pt each I reckon:

    Rox: 14
    Ray: 13
    Bald: 11

  103. Rox said, on 7 July, 2010 at 1:45 pm

That’s very generous, thanks. I had to work late last night, came home, had dinner, went to bed.

Bad luck on that second goal Baldrick. Those cheats shouldn’t even have been in the semis.

  104. Ray Dixon said, on 7 July, 2010 at 2:26 pm

I stayed up and watched Le Tour until 2 am. It was a great leg (over the cobblestones) and ‘our Cadel’ is now very well placed to grab the lead.

I won’t be getting up to watch the remaining ‘European World Cup’. It’s a foregone conclusion. Great how FIFA have kept it all about Europe. No wonder they are not able to expand – countries like the USA & Oz just can’t take them seriously.

Mind you, the French managed to keep Le Tour all about Europe for some time too, until Americans Armstrong & Flandis came along and steroided their way to the top. The best thing that could happen to Le Tour is a Cadel win.

  105. Rox said, on 7 July, 2010 at 4:39 pm

I saw your post and my eyes saw “leg over”. I must be worse than I thought. I would love Cadel to win. He’s worked for it.

I wonder if we’ll all tie on the W Cup. That would be great.

  106. Ray Dixon said, on 7 July, 2010 at 5:07 pm

If there is a tie in the tipping we will go to a shoot out, Rox. Baldy can devise the questions because he won’t be in it.

As for “leg” & “over” did you miss the bracket in between? You know, the ones that look like this:

    (.) (.)

  107. Rox said, on 7 July, 2010 at 5:43 pm

    Yes.

  108. Ray Dixon said, on 8 July, 2010 at 2:04 am

That’s it. I’ve watched Le Tour again (no change to the leaders) but I am not staying up until 4.30 to watch the soccer.

Besides, I have this strange feeling that Spain are going to win. I’m not changing my tip but I keep seeing this vision of a Spaniard standing on the goal line pushing the ball away with his hand and … you get the picture.

I must give up the drugs.

  109. Rox said, on 8 July, 2010 at 6:27 am

    I think you were right!!

  110. Baldrick said, on 8 July, 2010 at 7:31 am

    Overnight result:

    Spain v Germany 1-0

Spain played all over Germany. Total control throughout the match, had they been able to shoot straight should have won 5-0.

    No movement in points.

    Rox 14
    Ray 13
    Baldrick 11

    Now the remaining matches are:

Germany v Uruguay for 3rd place
    Spain v Netherlands

Rox looking good for second fridge magnet. Ray, breathing down Rox’s neck. Baldrick in withering run to hold last posiition (again)

  111. Ray Dixon said, on 8 July, 2010 at 9:24 am

I’m glad I didn’t watch it. Spain have slipped under the radar and haven’t done anything spectacular until now.

    A playoff for 3rd? That’s ridiculous:

Germany 1 v Uruguay 2 (The Germans won’t be motivated)

Spain 1 Netherlands 3 (Schneider to be the star)

  112. Ray Dixon said, on 8 July, 2010 at 2:15 pm

    Baldrick, blame the octopus:

    http://www.theage.com.au/world-cup-2010/world-cup-news/octopus-oracle-keeps-perfect-record-as-germans-demand-hes-turned-into-paella-20100708-1012k.html

You should have turned him into a dish before he made the fatal prediction.

  113. Rox said, on 8 July, 2010 at 5:20 pm

    Germany 3 Uuruguay 1

    Spain 2, Netherlands 1

  114. Ray Dixon said, on 8 July, 2010 at 5:25 pm

Rox, you’re undestimating ‘the Schneider factor’. He’s been the star of the whole comp.

And the other Schneider (the Saints one) is doing pretty well too – in fact I’d back him in to win the GF for us this time.

  115. Baldrick said, on 8 July, 2010 at 6:02 pm

    Rox, he’s in sleep deficit.

  116. Ray Dixon said, on 8 July, 2010 at 7:46 pm

So you’re going for Spain, Baldrick? Good luck with that. Don’t underestimate the power of ‘The Schneider’.

  117. Baldrick said, on 9 July, 2010 at 7:35 am

Not going for anyone now. Now that the Vaterland are out, no more interest. It’s Le Tour time.

  118. Baldrick said, on 9 July, 2010 at 9:32 am

Besides, I’m keeping my cards very close to my chest. Am getting a private reading from that little fecker of a cephalopod before tipping. I’m desperate for a magnet.

  119. Ray Dixon said, on 9 July, 2010 at 9:40 am

I’m tipping the octopus goes for Dutchlands. I asked the puppies.

  120. Ray Dixon said, on 9 July, 2010 at 11:07 am

Baldrick, I’ve put this comment about you in today’s AFL round 15 tips post:

“He’s still waiting for the octopus he ordered from Lakes Entrance. I bet he forgot to ask for a live one.”

    About right?

  121. Baldrick said, on 9 July, 2010 at 12:34 pm

    See comment in the email.

  122. Ray Dixon said, on 9 July, 2010 at 1:01 pm

They have it wrong, Rox. Paul is only an expert on games involving Germany. He’s out of his depth (no pun intended) if he takes on the final. My two puppies would be a better guide than that octopus.

I intend to throw out two bones, one in Dutch colours the other in Spanish, and see which one gets picked up first. Either way, I bet it’s the fat little one (named Sandy but I’m considering changing his name to Schneider) that picks up a bone first.

  123. Rox said, on 9 July, 2010 at 1:05 pm

What are you going to use for colouring?

  124. Ray Dixon said, on 9 July, 2010 at 1:12 pm

Good question. I was going to use textas but come to think of it I better go out and buy some non toxic vegetable dyes. Alternatively I could just dress them in team colours and only throw out one bone. But, as I said, the fat one will get there first. If it were a straight foot race with no food involved, the lean & spritely one (named River but I’m considering changing it to Riewoldt) would win easily. He runs like the wind.

  125. Baldrick said, on 10 July, 2010 at 5:01 pm

    Germany v Uruguay 6-0
Spain v Netherlands 2-2 ( Spain in penalties)

  126. Ray Dixon said, on 10 July, 2010 at 5:09 pm

You waited for the octopus and went with his tip, didn’t you Baldrick? Do you realise you’ve just conceded that an underwater blob that has never seen a game of soccer has more of a clue than you do?

  127. Ray Dixon said, on 10 July, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Btw, who is the octopus tipping in Le Tour?

  128. Baldrick said, on 11 July, 2010 at 9:10 am

Since when I have had a clue about anything?

But no, his prognostications had no bearing on my tips. Incidentally that little fecker got it right again with Germany in the 3-2 win over Uruguay.

That’s a lot tanks with molluscs he’d have to negotiate for the tour winner.

    Points update:

    Rox 1 point total 15
    Ray 13
    Baldrick 1 point 12

  129. Ray Dixon said, on 11 July, 2010 at 9:51 am

I dunno why I went for Uruguay the cheats. Anyway I did not watch it and I doubt I will watch the final either. I’ll be staying up to 2 am to see the end of tonight’s Le Tour though.

Cadel has moved into 2nd spot but surprisingly is further behind than when he was in 3rd position! That’s because that Frenchman who won last night’s leg also won the leg earlier in the week when the peleton protested and came in on a go-slow allowing Frenchie to win by 4 minutes when he should have been run down.

Cadel is the ‘moral’ leader right now and hopefully this French guy will fall in a heap when they hit the Alps proper tonight.

As fot the octopus, it’s easy. They only need to put in the tank the names of the top 5 or 6 most likely winners.

  130. Rox said, on 11 July, 2010 at 10:17 am

I feel sorry for poor McEwan. Why don’t they put some barriers up?

  131. Ray Dixon said, on 11 July, 2010 at 10:39 am

Allowing people to get too close to the riders (even running alongside them) just seems to be the French way. It adds to the atmosphere but yes, it’s dangerous.

  132. Rox said, on 11 July, 2010 at 11:42 am

I don’t care if the spectators get hurt – it’s only the French or the press after all – but I do care when a rider does, or a dog.

  133. Ray Dixon said, on 11 July, 2010 at 11:50 am

Rox, I’ll let you into a secret. Leanne & I have been planning to go to France one day and see Le Tour (as well as the rest of the beautiful countryside). We’d like to buy a cheap little holiday house in one of those beautiful old villages you see everywhere. Anyway, our plans include donning kangaroo suits and hopping alongside Cadel as he climbs the mountains. We won’t get too close but we just wanna do it. I promise you, one day you will see that happen and you’ll be able to say, “I know those two Roos”.

  134. Rox said, on 11 July, 2010 at 12:24 pm

    Dear god.

  135. Ray Dixon said, on 11 July, 2010 at 1:08 pm

Would koala suits be better? We could run faster in those.

  136. Rox said, on 11 July, 2010 at 1:28 pm

Yep? Hahaha, just had a mental image.

  137. Baldrick said, on 11 July, 2010 at 1:32 pm

    Dugongs?

  138. Ray Dixon said, on 11 July, 2010 at 1:41 pm

It’s just that Roos are the most readily identifiable Aussie animal. We could go as Emus but we might get mistaken for Nu Zulund Kiwis.

  139. Baldrick said, on 11 July, 2010 at 1:42 pm

I’d be more concerned if you were dressed as sheep

  140. Ray Dixon said, on 11 July, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Sheep? We wouldn’t want to risk being ‘mounted’ by Nu Zulunders.

  141. Rox said, on 11 July, 2010 at 4:37 pm

    Erk. Another mental image.

  142. Ray Dixon said, on 11 July, 2010 at 4:56 pm

A Nu Zulunder in a sheep costume = a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

An Aussie in a sheep costume = Kiwi bait.

  143. Ray Dixon said, on 12 July, 2010 at 1:58 am

Well done, Cadel, now leading Le Tour. Held off that Spanish bastard (not a good omen for Spain in the world cup final that I WILL NOT be staying up to watch).

  144. Rox said, on 12 July, 2010 at 6:56 am

    Wow – still deadlocked!

  145. Rox said, on 12 July, 2010 at 7:04 am

    Spain 1-0

  146. Baldrick said, on 12 July, 2010 at 7:10 am

Played the best football, deserved to win.

  147. Ray Dixon said, on 12 July, 2010 at 9:06 am

    Bloody octopus.

  148. Ray Dixon said, on 12 July, 2010 at 9:27 am

Come one, Baldrick, announce the final result of the tipping.

    And the winner is ……………………

  149. Ray Dixon said, on 12 July, 2010 at 1:21 pm

    Waiting, waiting ……………….

  150. Rox said, on 12 July, 2010 at 3:52 pm

    Worse than Centrelink.

  151. Ray Dixon said, on 12 July, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Yes, Rox. I’d make the announcement and ‘declaration’ of the results (even though we already know who won it) but I think it’s up to the person who instigated and, err, sort-of administered this comp to do so.

He’s probably devastated about coming last in both rounds.

  152. Rox said, on 12 July, 2010 at 4:24 pm

    :D

  153. Ray Dixon said, on 12 July, 2010 at 5:13 pm

He lost out to the octopus. Well, so did I.

  154. Ray Dixon said, on 12 July, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Well okay, I give up. It seems Baldrick has shirked his responsibilities. Here are the final results:

    Spain 1 Netherlands/Holland/Dutchville/Thuglands 0

They were a far better side than Spain but didn’t realise it and, instead, chose to play dirty instead of attacking soccer. More fool them.

Rox: 1 pt to 16 (as she picked the winner)
Ray: 0 pts to 13 (as he picked the Cloggies)
Baldrick: 0 pts to 12 (as he picked a draw, which didn’t happen *)

Congratulations to ROX for winning both World Cup tipping comps. We could have aggregated them into one comp but, even if we had, Rox still would have won. You beat us twice. Well done.

(* In case Bald is wondering, you don’t get a point for picking the winner on ‘shoot outs’ because it didn’t get that far)

  155. Baldrick said, on 12 July, 2010 at 9:02 pm

Congratulatons to Rox and Raymond. Just got back on the computer, that’s what happens when you go to work.

I apologise profusely for my tardiness and am hereby sacked from administering any more competitions of any form.

This should ensure a win-win situation, you will be spared inept administration and I will stand a better chance of winning something.

  156. Rox said, on 13 July, 2010 at 6:23 am

Thanks guys. I’m glad I won by more than the one point I didn’t really earn. that’s the first tipping competition I’ve ever won. Just goes t show what a blessing ignorance can be.

    It was fun.

Thanks Baldrick – it was a great competition and well run. Don’t resign. Think it over for four years. :)

  157. Ray Dixon said, on 13 July, 2010 at 10:55 am

Baldrick, I think you should run for council at the next election and then Mayor. You’d be perfect in that role. No need to worry about being held accountable to those who put you there!

  158. Baldrick said, on 13 July, 2010 at 5:40 pm

You know, I think I will.

  159. Ray Dixon said, on 13 July, 2010 at 6:25 pm

Well then, you would be well advised to form an allegiance with Ray Dyer & his goat. Try and rope in a few other fruitcakes/retrogrades too (like Pearce & Steven & Cain) who can all give you a 2nd preference vote. Don’t say anything controversial or meaningful from now until the election. Just answer questions as blandly as possible. And – most importantly – promise the dear people of Bright that you:

    a) Want it to “stay as it is”
    b) Oppose any money being spent on tourism
    c) Oppose any money being spent on making the town present better
    d) Will oppose ALL applications for any kind of development in Bright

You’ll be a monty to get elected.

  160. Baldrick said, on 13 July, 2010 at 6:48 pm

You know, I think I might.

  161. Ray Dixon said, on 13 July, 2010 at 7:00 pm

So a to d are okay by you?

  162. Baldrick said, on 13 July, 2010 at 7:53 pm

If it gets me elected of course, since when is being elected based on prnciples

  163. Ray Dixon said, on 13 July, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Since people decided it was about self-interest and not the common good.

  164. Ray Dixon said, on 13 July, 2010 at 9:31 pm

I meant “not” since people decided that. You get what I mean. There is no one, repeat no one, on this council working for what needs to be done. So, you still want to join them?

  165. Baldrick said, on 13 July, 2010 at 10:32 pm

As Groucho Marx once said ” I won’t be part of any organisation that would have me as a member” or something to that effect.

  166. Ray Dixon said, on 13 July, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Yeah, I agree with that too now.

Btw, you watching Le Tour? Looks like a great night (again).

This has been the best tour ever so far. Gripping stuff.

    Cheers, councillor.

  167. Rox said, on 14 July, 2010 at 6:36 am

And Cadel is out of the Tour. What a bloody shame.

  168. Baldrick said, on 14 July, 2010 at 7:09 am

He’s soldiering on Rox at this point. His pride is keeping him going. But what a massive blow, this was potentially the best shot he had at the title, with only Andy Schleck the main threat. Poor bugger.

  169. Ray Dixon said, on 14 July, 2010 at 9:36 am

He fractured his elbow in the fall during the previous leg and just couldn’t exert pressure on it and go with them when the pack broke on the final climb last night. He was looking so good until then.
