AFL round 19 ‘expert’ tips

Posted in AFL footy by Ray Dixon on 6 August, 2010

It’s “The Real AFL” round

Andrew Demetriou is never one to fail to keep up with the news. And with modern trends. According to Andrew, if Julia Gillard can reinvent herself as ‘The Real Julia’ then he can do the same for the AFL.

Welcome to ‘The Real AFL’, you know, the one we always knew was there but wouldn’t show itself.

And, in keeping with this wipe-the-slate-clean approach, let’s just forget that we already had ‘The game of the year’ in Rd 13 between Geelong & St Kilda (won by you know who) and ‘The game of the century’ in Rd 14 last year (also won by you know who), and let’s call tomorrow’s clash between Geelong & Collingwood all that.

Don’t worry that these games between The Handbaggers & The Scum usually end up as an anti-climax and a blow out one way or the other (last time Geelong belted Collingwood by playing boring kick-it-around-the-back-line footy ad nauseam). No. This IS the real deal and the winner of this game is truly “Team of the year” and “Team of the century” and … “Premiers”. Who needs the finals in September to sort that out?

With this in my mind I bring you “the real experts” and their tips (don’t worry, it’s the same faces but with the word “real” added):

Real Ray (4) (90)

Essendon v Carlton: Because the “real” Carlton is just bursting to get out, whereas what we saw from Essendon last week was very unreal.

Sydney v Hawthorn: Well as I am the Real Ray now, I would be nuts to pick Sydney and lose any chance of catching up on “Real Greg”.

Nth Melbourne v Fremantle: The “real” Freo is sitting on the bench injured – Sandilands, Barlow, Ballantyne, Tarrant … etc. Oh, the list of misery goes on. They’d win it if it were in Perth but over here … well let’s get “real”.

West Coast v Brisbane: Well these two can reinvent themselves all they like but they will stilll be “real” duds.

Geelong v Collingwood: The best part is that the Pies supporters (bless them) “really” believe that this is the “real” Collingwood we are seeing and that they are the “real” deal and will not only go all the way, they already have! “Really”?

St Kilda v Pt Adelaide: It “really” is about time the Saints got “real” and started winning again. You know why? Well if they finish top 4 they are a “real” chance of winning it this year – despite what the critics “really” think.

Melbourne v Richmond: Battle of the emerging “real” deals, and I “really” mean that. Honestly, I do. I like both these sides but Melbourne look just a little more “real” to me.

Adelaide v Bulldogs: Two losses in a row means the Crows season is “really” stuffed and they have no hope or incentive to win this against the “real” determined (but not “really talented” Bullies.

.

Real Baldrick (2) (89)

ESSENDON v Carlton
HAWTHORN v Sydney
NTH.MELBOURNE v Fremantle
WEST COAST v Brisbane
COLLINGWOOD v Geelong
ST.KILDA v Pt.Adelaide
FOOTSCRAY v Adelaide
MELBOURNE v Richmond

.

Real Greg (5) (93)

My tips for this week are
Essendon to beat Carlton – the bombers are bombing and the blues have the blues
Hawthorn to beat Sydney – they need to stay in the race
Fremantle to beat North Melbourne – I have no idea why with the recent form of both teams
Collingwood to beat Geelong – Ray seems to think the Grand Final was held a couple of weeks ago
Brisbane to beat West Coast – That game is as hard to pick as the Collinwood / Geelong game
St Kilda to beat Port Adelaide – it seems this game has been arranged to help St Kilda get back inGrand Final contention
Melbourne to beat Richmond – because the betting odds are with Melbourne
Footscray to beat Adelaide – just to keep the competition alive for the finals

(Yeah that’s “really” good Greg but hang on, it’s not me who thinks the GF is over. It’ all you Collingwood supporters who think ‘the premiership’s a cake-wak’. Good. Go on thinking that)

.

Real Rox (6) (88)

I actually resorted to the betting market to get some help, but I’ve tipped a few differently from them.

Carlton to beat Essendon. No, strike that (please Ray, I know you can). I’m picking my team this week. It’s too close to call anyway, both on the AFL site and on Sportingbet.

Hawthorn to beat Sydney. I know Rioli’s out, but I think they can do it. Sydney have been very ordinary lately.

Ho hum. NMFC to beat Freo? Tarrant out. Sandilands out. 12 cents between them in the betting. (To Freo, but I’m going for North)

Collingwood to beat Geelong – against the tipping. I wouldn’t have a clue.

Eagles to win over Brisbane. “Which is the worst side in the competition? This clash will decide who deserves the dubious honour.” (AFL website) And who cares, eh?

Saints to beat Port. Anything else is unthinkable. They should be used to have Nick back by now.

Richmond to beat Melbourne. I’m really going out on a limb here apparently.

Footerscray to win over Adelaide. They just have to.

I’m just clarifying that I tipped Essendon. So I can’t back out tomorrow.

  2. Ray Dixon said, on 6 August, 2010 at 4:09 pm

No problem, Rox. Good luck but I just think Carlton have too much to play for.

Now it’s back to those lawns. First cut of the winter and is it playing havoc with my asthma or what?

  4. Ray Dixon said, on 6 August, 2010 at 5:05 pm

Avoided an asthma attack this time.

  5. Rox said, on 6 August, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Do you have Ventolin in Bright?

  6. Ray Dixon said, on 6 August, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Oh yeah, I’ve got the ‘puffers’ Rox, although it’s Asmol now, not Ventolin. And then there’s the preventor, Pulmicort (which is a steroid). I took both those after the first attack, and that’s how I was able to go back and ‘face the lawn’. It is a constant battle. Anything sets me off.

  7. Rox said, on 7 August, 2010 at 11:24 am

Well, what a creaming. I thought they might come back but they were terrible. :(

  8. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 11:34 am

I can’t believe that I was the only one to pick Carlton. I saw it coming because the reality was Carlton were playing for a spot in the finals, whereas Essendon can’t make it anyway. Carlton have a hard 3 remaining games so they just had to win last night. Ironically they could still drop out of the 8 if they lose 2 of the last 3.

  9. Baldrick said, on 7 August, 2010 at 12:00 pm

I think I didn’t see anything coming as I’m not paying attention. Serves me right.

  10. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Yes, Geelong supporters are much like Collingwood ones – they only have eyes for their own team.

  11. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 3:20 pm

You know, I was going to tip Sydney but I played it safe. It’s all over @ half time.

  12. Baldrick said, on 7 August, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Nah, it’s not that, it’s just that I couldn’t give a stuff about the season. Waiting on the Premier League to start.

Mini recovery here for the Hawks,( it’s on in the background)

  13. Rox said, on 7 August, 2010 at 5:11 pm

    What’s’ the Premier League? Rugby?

  14. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 5:23 pm

It’s that game played in England by metrosexuals.

    Results after 3 games:

    Ray: 2
    Rox & Baldrick: 1
    Greg: 0

    YTD:

    Greg: 93
    Ray: 92
    Baldrick: 90
    Rox: 89

It’s looking tighter than the election result.

  15. Baldrick said, on 7 August, 2010 at 6:13 pm

The highest soccer league in England Rox. Competition consists of West Ham v not West Ham i.e. lots of glory teams such as Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham blah blah blah.

As opposed to our pollies, I concede.

  16. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 7:51 pm

Why would anyone born & bred in Australia be more interested in metrosexual round-ball football in England (20,000kms away) than in AFL? Beats me.

Anyway, this so-called ‘game of the year’ (*) is a bit of a fizzer so far. Not exactly high standard. Looks like a Collingwood runaway victory to me.

Btw, how does Tom ‘Doofus’ Hawkins get a game? Honestly, he’s a real klutz. Then again, how does Leon ‘no kicks’ Davis get a game for the Pies?

(* Maybe they should have called it ’2nd best game of the year’, seeing as though the ‘game of the year’ was played in Rd 13)

  17. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 8:25 pm

Geezus, C’wood gets 5 goals up and thinks they’ve won it. Goes to sleep and lets Geelong back in. This is a matter of which side can be more inept. (Tommy still looks a little out of his depth and Leon finally got a kick … hit the post!)

  18. Baldrick said, on 7 August, 2010 at 8:36 pm

What is Geelong’s efficiency? When we go forward, deadly. Pies playing all over the Cats but those posters costly. I have never been a Hawkins fan, tonight will prove he is a reserves player. Playing injured not doing his cause any good either.

As for loving the round ball code more, don’t imagine I could explain properly, nor would you be interested. Perhaps the heritage is a heavy influence. Incidentally, I do support a German side, Eintracht Frankfurt, but the love for West Ham knows no bounds.

  19. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 8:41 pm

Geelong has real goal scorers like Chapman, Varcoe, Ablett, etc, but Collingwood doesn’t. That’s what is keeping you in the game despite C’wood’s dominance of what passes for general play – more like a scramble if you ask me.

I believe Alf Garnett was also a big West Ham fan. You identify with him?

  20. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 8:51 pm

I forgot to mention Mathew ‘cocaine’ Stokes. He’s deadly. Can really snort it! No, seriously, Geelong understands that to win games you have to kick goals. Look at Collingwood’s inept shots @ goal – they can’t finish off. Still, it could go either way.

  21. Baldrick said, on 7 August, 2010 at 8:53 pm

One of the greatest disappointments was that Warren Mitchell (aka Garnett is a Tottscum supporter). West Ham is from the East End of London, rough as guts. In the 70′s they had a very poor reputation, especially due to hooliganism. I went to a game in 2008 and it has become very gentrified. Until we play Millwall. These derbies make Collingwood v Carlton look like a kindergarten.

Iron Maiden all Hammers fans, Billy Bragg, Obama, Keira Knightly amongst others apparently all Hammers, aka Irons.

Varcoe is a vastly improved player. Taylor’s injury will level out Reid’s loss, although with respect the former is a better player.

And how was that disallowed goal for Byrnes.

  22. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 9:19 pm

I’m sure Alf was a West Hammer.

Anyway, I agree about that goal (sack the goal umpire) but unfortunately it looks like the scum have got you and I think they might run away in the last quarter. The sheer weight of possession looks like it’s going against Geelong and getting C’wood goals despite their haphazardness.

I hope the Saints play them in the finals because they won’t get away with that against us. We’d have them strangled by now.

Interesting game but only because it’s been close for 3 quarters. No much class in it.

  23. Baldrick said, on 7 August, 2010 at 9:35 pm

Alf Garnett was a Hammer. But when Mitchell toured Oz for a theatre season, he revealed he himself was a Tottenham supporter.
    Cats are finished.

  24. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 10:45 pm

22 pts wasn’t too bad in the end – although C’wood’s kicking made it closer (14.23 !!!!). I’m glad they won because now they’ll think it’s all over. They won’t win the flag – not from what I saw tonight.

Btw, I can’t believe Brisbane won in Perth. Greg gets one back.

  25. Husky Jim said, on 7 August, 2010 at 11:24 pm

What did you see tonight to make you believe the cats can beat Collongwood Ray.

  26. Ray Dixon said, on 7 August, 2010 at 11:41 pm

I saw Geelong. They can beat Collingwood and so can St Kilda and maybe even Footscray. Whether or not Geelong will do it in the finals remains to be seen but I think someone might.

  27. Ray Dixon said, on 8 August, 2010 at 12:48 pm

I know, Rox. It’s unfair – I would have been equal with Greg YTD if not for that miscarriage. Now he’s two clear.

  28. Baldrick said, on 8 August, 2010 at 2:06 pm

    Kick-off is next weekend.

  29. Ray Dixon said, on 8 August, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Kick-off of the English Premier League is next week? Well, only you and about 50 other people in Australia care.

  30. Ray Dixon said, on 8 August, 2010 at 11:47 pm

    Results for Rd 19:

    Ray : 6 (96)
    Greg : 5 (98)
    Baldrick : 5 (94)
    Rox : 4 (92)
