AFL round 20 ‘expert’ tips

Posted in AFL footy by Ray Dixon on 13 August, 2010

It’s ‘The NBN round’

Thanks to that ’non-tech-head’ and blissfully ignorant Tony Rabbott and his frank but stupid admission that he knows nothing about the Internet - yet is still proposing to spend $6 billion upgrading an outdated and underperforming system into another outdated and underperforming system - I think I’ll dedicate round 20 to that hot issue.

Just for the hell of it.

Let’s do a little Julia Gillard classroom-style exercise here:

  1. Hands up those who say, “Fibre optic cable is the way to go.”
  2. Now hands up those who say, “No, I love the inefficient copper wire and dud wireless systems, let’s stick with those”.

Oh, I think we have an overwhelming majority for option one – the NBN.

Bad luck Mr Rabbott, better luck to you (oh, sorry, I meant to Malcolm) in the 2013 election.

What’s all this got to do with footy? Well, nothing, but I couldn’t let the opportunity go by.

So, here are ‘the experts’ – it’s getting close  and anyone of us could win this (well, except Baldrick maybe?):

Ray (6) (96)

Essendon v Collingwood: Well, this is a classic no-brainer. Even more of a no-brainer than Copper Wire v Fibre Optic.

Carlton v Richmond : Bloody hard. Carlton is definitely old technology and Richmond are a rising new breed, but not there yet. Hmmm … I reckon Carlton have too much to lose here.

Fremantle v Sydney : The West is already gone (to the Libs) so there’s no way Sydney can take its gay marriage proposal over there.

Bulldogs v Geelong: It’s like comparing the speed of the NBN with phoney Tony’s dumb copper wire upgrade. The Cats are getting old, tired & slow.

Port Adelaide v West Coast : This is like having to decide if you want copper wire or wireless – they’re both no good. Go for the home side.

Brisbane v Adelaide : Ah, another battle between two dud systems. But it’s Brown’s 200th and they are well & truly overdue.

Hawthorn v Melbourne : Kennett has given them such a kick up the arse that the old tech Hawks will just get over the line against the fledgling new super team.

Nth Melbourne v St Kilda : North has about as much hope as Mr ‘last century’ Rabbott’s idea of a $6 billion upgrade getting the nod. None.

.

Baldrick (5) (94)

Essendon
Richmond
Sydney
Footscray
West Coast
Brisbane
Melbourne
St.Kilda

Aston Villa 2 West Ham 1

.

Greg (5) (98)

This week I’m picking:

Collingwood, Carlton, Fremantle, Geelong, Port Adelaide, Adelaide, Hawthorn and StKilda.

If Essendon apply pressure to Collingwood, watch out for a Collingwood game thrower to protect their assets for the finals. I reckon Melbourne might even beat the Hawks … very interesting.

(Yeah, but you’re picking Collingwood & Hawthorn anyway, aren’t you Greg?)

.

Rox (4) (92)

There are more players out this week for one reason or another that it’s a matter of who’s left standing.

Collingwood to defeat Essendon
Carlton to beat Richmond
Fremantle to beat the Swans –
perhaps
Cats to beat the Doggies,
who can barely field a team
Port to beat the Eagles
Crows to beat the Lions
Hawks to beat the Demons –
though I’d love to see the Demons win, and maybe they will
Saints to beat NMFC

My opening comment doesn’t make sense. Oh well – you get the drift.

  2. Ray Dixon said, on 13 August, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Um, yeah, I get it Rox … I think.

Btw, have a look at Baldy’s tips – I think he’s making a desperate grab for the lead.

  3. roxanna101 said, on 13 August, 2010 at 5:11 pm

    I think we’re losing him.

Is Sunderland playing this weekend? Nul points for Premier League (ie The Soccer) tips.

  4. Baldrick said, on 13 August, 2010 at 5:19 pm

Sunderland v Birmingham (Sunderland, aka Mackems, playing home)

  5. roxanna101 said, on 13 August, 2010 at 5:55 pm

    Do they have any chance?

  6. Baldrick said, on 13 August, 2010 at 6:13 pm

    Crikey. How does yes sound?

  7. roxanna101 said, on 14 August, 2010 at 8:20 am

    Pretty good. :D

I run the risk of being vilified by the Aussie Rules xenophobes Rox, but here is a link that might be instructive for predictions in the Premier League

    Metrosexual.

    BOLD PREDICTIONS #1

Final four: Collingwood, St Kilda, Footscray, Geelong

Sticking your neck out there Ray.

Who’s going to win the GF then?

  12. Ray Dixon said, on 14 August, 2010 at 12:02 pm

It’s not really sticking my neck out, Rox. Those teams are already top 4 and can’t really be knocked out. The only change I see is Geelong slipping from 2nd to 4th and facing Collingwood in week one of the finals, making it real hard for them to reach the GF. That result of course, depends on Footscray beating Geelong this round, which I think they will.

As for who will win the GF, I don’t care to predict, but the ‘order of likelihood’ is the same order as my top 4 prediction – i.e. Collingwood, St Kilda, Footscray & Geelong. I reckon Geelong are no chance though.

Just on Collingwood and their manic, super-powered performances lately, just watching it does anyone get the same impression I do – that these blokes look like they’re pumped up to the gills on something?

Man, they just can’t seem to slow down. I’m not trying to suggest anything but this is extraordinary and not even Geelong or St Kilda over the last few years have gone into the finals at breakneck speed & intensity like Collingwood are. It’s gotta come off the rails soon – well, I hope it does!

  14. Baldrick said, on 14 August, 2010 at 1:17 pm

Not fussed. If they sustain this momentum, they deserve to win.

  15. Ray Dixon said, on 14 August, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Like Hawthorn did in 2008 with, um, a little help?

  16. Ray Dixon said, on 14 August, 2010 at 7:08 pm

I’m looking forwad to this game, Geelong & Footscray. It’s ‘can you do it?’ time for the Bullies. Geelong, if it loses, are on the way out.

  17. Ray Dixon said, on 14 August, 2010 at 8:16 pm

Well, I was looking forward to it. “Can you do it Bullies?”. Well, no, obviously you’re stuffed. And also obviously, Geelong are back in the premiership equation. Although they’ll have to play St Kilda in week one of the finals now, so …. maybe they’re still out?

  18. Ray Dixon said, on 15 August, 2010 at 8:38 am

I’m off to Melbourne today – Medallion Club tickets for the Saints game @ Docklands tonight !! Back late tomorrow.

  19. Greg Naylor said, on 15 August, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Ray, as I read this post and the comparisons to politics, I have just realised that you should have done a political assassination on Zuvelle Leschen and stood for the seat of Indi. You would have had a better chance of beating Sophie.

  20. Rox said, on 15 August, 2010 at 1:29 pm

Ooh look Baldy! You accidentally won one! :D

  21. Baldrick said, on 15 August, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Apologies. There’s only so much one can do.

  22. Rox said, on 16 August, 2010 at 5:29 pm

Have I overtaken Baldy yet? I won’t believe it till someone else tells me.

Sunderland played out for a 2-2 draw with one man down. There was an appeal against the sending off. (See what the World Cup does to me?)

  23. Baldrick said, on 16 August, 2010 at 5:51 pm

Rox, you’ll get us both banned.

My lot typically went down in a screaming heap. Same ole West Ham.

I don’t know what else I have to do to run last in this AFL comp btw.

  24. Rox said, on 16 August, 2010 at 6:07 pm

Don’t say that. I’m coming last and I’m actually trying to win. :(

However, I don’t feel embarrassed any more because I won the World Cup. Er, tipping.

  25. Baldrick said, on 16 August, 2010 at 6:26 pm

Well, ever the pragmatist and with a fair level of polemic and rhetoric flourish I state that had I been successful in tipping outsiders, it was all part of the plan, however, if unsuccessful, I aim to lose.

I take the latter is my spiel. My first year being a swinging tipper. Not sure that it rests well with me.

So who do the Mackems play next Rox? I’m too frightened to see who we play.

  26. Rox said, on 16 August, 2010 at 6:36 pm

You play Bolton, we play WBA, which I just found out is West Bromich, whoever they are.

Oh, they’re on the bottom. Good show.

  27. Baldrick said, on 16 August, 2010 at 6:44 pm

I think Raymond will have conniptions when he gets back on this.

  28. Ray Dixon said, on 16 August, 2010 at 11:37 pm

I have no idea what you two are talking about.

    Results for Rd 20:

    Ray: 5 (101)
    Baldrick: 2 (96)
    Greg: 7 (105)
    Rox: 7 (99)

It is going to be a monumental task to overhaul Greg in the last 2 rounds. Well, monumental for Rox & I, impossible for Baldrick.

  29. Baldrick said, on 17 August, 2010 at 7:06 pm

I’ve got a very cunning plan

  30. Ray Dixon said, on 17 August, 2010 at 7:26 pm

    Yes. I’ve noticed.

  31. Rox said, on 20 August, 2010 at 4:58 pm

It is tipping day isn’t it?

  32. Ray Dixon said, on 20 August, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Yes Rox. The Rd 21 post has been up for hours. Are you sufferring sleep deprivation like Mr Rabbott?
