AFL round 6 (2011) ‘expert’ tips

Posted in AFL footy by Ray Dixon on 28 April, 2011

2011 ~ The battle of 'the uglies'

It’s ‘Danger Round’

The 2011 season is already in danger of becoming a two-horse race between Geelong and – gasp, gulp, horror, spew – bloody Collingwood.

It’s almost a given that these two ugly sides will fill the top 2 positions on the ladder at the end of the year and it’s just a matter of who the hell else can grab 3rd or 4th spot, which are, in effect, the same thing as finishing 1 or 2 (unless you’re an interstate side).

I reckon Freo has a sniff of a chance at the moment but I doubt their ability to win a final over here in Victoria. This is looking like the season from hell and we’ll all be bored to tears watching 15 other sides waste their time over the next 18 weeks.

Ho hum … here are the ’expert’ tips on what shapes as a bloody dangerous round for tipping too. Last week’s results & YTD in brackets:

.

Ray (5) (27) says:

West Coast v Melbourne: Not over there Dees. Not yet. Maybe in about, oh …. 2015?

Sydney v Carlton: Carlton do not (and cannot) beat Sydney on the SCG. That’s just a fact.

North Melbourne v Pt Adelaide: As useless as North are, they just have too much pride to stay winless and/or lose to the side that lost to the Suns.

Richmond v Brisbane: This is an absolute certainty.

Adelaide v St Kilda: Yeah, I’m tipping out of loyalty on this one, not out of common sense. Pleeeeaaase boys, please!

Essendon v Gold Coast: There’s a real danger here that The Suns, having broken through for their maiden win last week over in SA, will actually miss the plane and forfeit. They’d still be drunk wouldn’t they?

Collingwood v Bulldogs: Not exactly a ‘cakewalk’ for the Pies but Footscray just don’t have it this year.

.

Tassie Rox (5) (27) says:

Ho Hum, some dreary games in this lot.

Eagles to beat the Demons
Swans to beat the Blues (hard one)
Port Adelaide to win over NMFC (hard AND boring)
Bombers to beat the Suns
Tigers to win over the Lions
Collingwood to beat the Bulldogs, who are a real let-down this year.
Adelaide to beat St Kilda – painful, but the Saints seem to have lost their way.

Cheers

.

King of Euroa Greg Naylor (6) (29) says:

Nothing yet

.

Bright’s boy from the bush, Baldrick (5) (29) says:

You give matches like these, I give you tips like this. Feck sake, no Geelong? What’s the point?

West Coast
Sydney
Nth.Melbourne
Richmond
Adelaide
Essendon
Collingwood

Btw, only 7 games! Again! Three weeks in a row. This bye thing is mucking up true ladder positions, and will continue to do so right through to round 24. Imagine this: you’re (artificially) just in the 8 after Rd 23 and then in the last Rd you’ve got the bye. And no points. Solution: Everyone gets 4 pts for the bye. That way we will see the true ladder positions all the way through.

  2. Rox said, on 28 April, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Has anyone ever said why the byes are?

  3. Ray Dixon said, on 28 April, 2011 at 2:06 pm

There has to be at least one team having a bye every week because there are now 17 teams. And why they’re having only 7 games lately has something to do with the fact every team must play 22 games over 24 weeks and it just works out that there has to be a few rounds of 7 to make it fit. I could work it all out mathematically, Rox, but I couldn’t be bothered – it’s just dumb to have an odd number of teams.

All matches live on Foxtel/Austar 2012 – 2016. I bet you wish you had Pay TV now!

Thursday night footy’s not exactly a great success. Look AFL, if you’re going to spread out the games to almost 7 nights a week and intrude on ‘non-footy time’, then do try to schedule something a bit more riveting than West Coast v Melbourne. That game was over after 15 minutes. Long trip home for the Dees. I’d rather watch Big Brother or Dancing with the stars. Um … no I wouldn’t.

  6. Baldrick said, on 29 April, 2011 at 7:02 am

It really wasn’t rivetting was it? Melbourne looked inept. Any signs of an early snow fall?

  7. Baldrick said, on 30 April, 2011 at 9:06 am

Just looked at your pic above of the two beauties. I suspect our Mooney may be on limited time. May make cameo appearances to maim opposition players but he has become largely ineffective of late. The young bucks are now putting their hand up and doing an admirable job.

  8. Ray Dixon said, on 30 April, 2011 at 9:26 am

And then there’s jPod, who looks like a 45- yo playing suburban football reserves.

  9. Baldrick said, on 30 April, 2011 at 9:43 am

He is certainly labouring. Good reserves player I would have imagined, the freakish first year debut has long faded away. I think we’re still picking him for sentimentality sakes and we’re not losing either.

My tipping is letting the sisterhood down this week.

  11. Ray Dixon said, on 30 April, 2011 at 10:32 pm

I can’t talk right now – taking a full box of sleeping tablets. Goodbye Saints for 2011.

  12. Rox said, on 1 May, 2011 at 7:56 am

Come back here and face the music.

  13. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 9:49 am

Okay, I’ll face it. St Kilda played without any confidence and kicked atrociously. Ironically, had they not missed those very easy shots they would have won, despite not deserving to.

I dunno if they’re really sunk this year or not. They certainly need to beat Carlton next week under the roof at Etihad if they are to have any chance of getting their season on track.

I’m not making excuses but I still say they’ve suffered from playing 4 of their first 5 games at night in the open in slippery conditions that don’t suit them (2 at the MCG, 1 at the Gabba and last night in Adelaide).

They’ve won 1 and drawn 1 from their first 5. In 1997, St kilda won only 1 of its first 5 but finished top of the ladder and made the GF. And in 2007, Geelong was looking gone after 5 rounds with only 2 wins and playing ordinary footy. We all know what happened after that.

But as I said, they have to turn it around very soon. Against Carlton.

  14. Rox said, on 1 May, 2011 at 10:56 am

I don’t think they can – do you?

  15. Baldrick said, on 1 May, 2011 at 11:15 am

Carlton are no mugs, pretty quick and good in the air too. Will be a real test.

  16. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 11:28 am

Beat Judd, beat Carlton. They’re good but only when he fires (which is usually).

  17. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 1:33 pm

Essendon v Gold Coast. 9 goals to zip and the first 1/4 is still going. This could be a record whipping.

  18. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 1:33 pm

    10-zip.

  19. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 1:36 pm

    11 – 0. Not 1/4 time yet.

  20. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 1:44 pm

Quarter time scores: Essendon 15.4.94, Gold Coast 0.1.1

It’s a record score for a first quarter. Highest ever in AFL/VFL history. And a record first quarter margin.

I’m going outside to do the lawns. Only 2 questions remain:

    (1) Will Essendon kick 40 or 50 goals for the game? (the record’s about 38 I think)
    (2) Will Gold Coast kick any?

  21. Rox said, on 1 May, 2011 at 1:55 pm

    Bombers away!

  22. Rox said, on 1 May, 2011 at 2:08 pm

    18.4 to 2.2

  23. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 3:23 pm

I’ve been outside and come back to find Essendon 25 goals to 7 @ 3/4 time?

What, only 10 goals to 7 for 2 quarters? They’ve eased up. Not going for the record.

  24. Rox said, on 1 May, 2011 at 3:40 pm

No, disappointing, but I suppose there wasn’t much incentive.

  25. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 6:35 pm

Won’t Gold Coast v Brisbane next week be a hoot? It’s a GC home game … played at the Gabba! Again.

  26. Baldrick said, on 1 May, 2011 at 6:52 pm

    Footscray apparently hanging in there.

  27. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 7:04 pm

    Oh – they were!

  28. Baldrick said, on 1 May, 2011 at 7:11 pm

    I mozzed them.

  29. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 7:50 pm

I switched over well before the end. It only got worse from there. Who the hell will beat C’wood? Don’t say Geelong.

  30. Rox said, on 1 May, 2011 at 7:59 pm

    Carlton

  31. Baldrick said, on 1 May, 2011 at 8:22 pm

I’d already conceded the Grand Final to the scum very early in the year and have not seen anything to contradict that.

  32. Ray Dixon said, on 1 May, 2011 at 11:29 pm

    Rd 6 results:

    Baldrick 6 (35)

    Rox & Ray 5 (32)

    Greg ?

  33. Ray Dixon said, on 2 May, 2011 at 7:18 pm

Great news for St Kilda – Zac Dawson cops 1-match suspension.

That’s as good as him getting dropped. We’ll have a better chance of beating Carlton without him.

  34. Baldrick said, on 3 May, 2011 at 5:23 pm

    Wheels are falling off
