Beatles trivia

Posted in trivia by Ray Dixon on 17 November, 2011

Yet to be surpassed.

This will keep me up all night. We just switched over to Channel 7 to watch The Amazing Race (a show I actually enjoy) and caught the end of some stupid quiz show where the last question was this:

“How many Beatles’ songs have a woman’s name in the title?”

As if anyone would carry that information in their head. I’m a big Beatles fan too but that’s not something I’ve even thought about … until now. Apparently the correct answer is 18 but I’m buggered if I can think of more than a few including:

  1. Anna (on the ‘B’ side of one of their earlier hits)
  2. Julia (about John Lennon’s mother)
  3. Lady Madonna
  4. Lovely Rita Meter Maid (from Sargeant Pepper’s)
  5. Dear Prudence *
  6. Long Tall Sally * (###)
  7. Eleanor Rigby *
  8. Lucy in the sky with diamonds (about LSD) *
  9. Michelle *
  10. Sexy Sadie *
  11. Polythene Pam *

Can anyone help? I’ll update this as more come to mind. Oh look, The Amazing Race is on.

(* = updates to original post)

(### Long Tall Sally is not a Beatles original, so I think the correct answer is 10  – as above)

I just thought of two more – Dear Prudence & Long Tall Sally. I’ll update the post.

Oh yes – Eleanor Rigby … how could I forget that?

Oh geezus, I’m asleep – Lucy in the sky with diamonds (even though it’s about drugs).

    And Michelle – a classic.

It’s all coming back to me now and, no, I’m not looking it up.

    Only in the title huh?

What about within the lyrics as well?

  5. Ray Dixon said, on 18 November, 2011 at 9:23 am

No, Indii, the quiz question was only on song titles.

I’m tempted to Google a complete Beatles song list or at least look at some of my Beatle CDs … but so far I’m resisting and trying to do it all from memory (not that I’m focusing on this for more than five minutes every now & then!)

    Dizzy Miss Lizzie.

Sorry I haven’t been around – that thing turned into pneumonia.

Hi Rox – I was wondering where you had gone. Hope you’re getting better.

As for Dizzy Miss Lizzy, well, it’s not a Beatles’ song per se, in that they didn’t write it. In fact I think they didn’t even formally record it, although they sang it live at some concerts. My interpretation of the question is it’s about Beatles originals … so no prize for you! Cheers.

Apologies, Rox. The Beatles did record Dizzy Miss Lizzy (on the ‘Help’ album), although they still didn’t write it … so I’m not adding it to the list.

    Boo and hiss.

  10. Ray Dixon said, on 20 November, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Actually, Rox, I think the answer of “18″ is wrong – if they’re talking real Beatles song. I just thought of ‘Polythene Pam’ & ‘Sexy Sadie’, which makes only 11. Then again, ‘Long Tall sally’ is not a Beatles original so that brings my list back to 10, which I think is about right.

    (I’ll update it)

Ahh hello? Hey Jude???!!! And don’t give me the crap about Jude maybe being a guys name!

  12. Ray Dixon said, on 27 November, 2011 at 8:27 am

Hey Jude was written about John Lennon’s son, Julian, so I guess it’s not a song about a woman.

Penny Lane from album Magical Mystery Tour and written by Lennon / McCartney should make the list. I too was wondering about Hey Jude. Also wondering about Honey Don`t from album Beatles For Sale. Not written by a Beatle, but is `Honey` a name like `Moonbeam` and other hippy type names?

Damn, barely clicked the post button and this popped into my head. Maggie Mae, I think from album Let It Be. Another song called Martha My Dear, but can`t remember album. PS Long Tall Sally is on a live recorded album made during the 1990s? from forgotten tapes of their early days, in hamberg? or cavern-club? Of course, not Beatle written.

  15. Ray Dixon said, on 20 December, 2011 at 6:32 am

I would pay Martha My Dear but as for the rest:

Penny Lane is a place name, not a woman’s name. Technically Penny is also a girl’s name but it’s also a coin and in this case I think Penny might refer to the (cheap) shops in the Lane.

The Honey in Honey Don’t is a term of endearment, not a name.

Wasn’t Maggie Mae a Rod Stewart song?

Thanks for topping up the list.

Different Maggie May – this one’s an old trad Liverpool one. And Penny Lane is a street – I’ve been down it.

  17. Rox said, on 21 December, 2011 at 11:00 am

    Where’s the Christmas thread?

  18. Rox said, on 21 December, 2011 at 11:04 am

Hey Jude was originally Hey Jules, for Julian Lennon. They changed it to Jude, presumably because it sounds better.

I know all this because I was at the Beatles’ concert in Festival Hall in 1964. I am very old.

Sorry I’ve been missing – after the pneumonia I got the infection equivalent of post-viral syndrome and I’m still home sick.

  19. Ray Dixon said, on 21 December, 2011 at 2:02 pm

I’ve never heard of “Maggie May” by the Beatles … and I’m an “old” Beatles fan too. But in 1964 I was (unfortunately) on a Boy Scouts camp in the Dandenongs when they were in Melbourne. Missed it all. Not my choice. What album is it on, Rox, and did they write it?

    Hope you’re okay by Xmas.

Xmas thread? Since when I have ran one of those?

  20. Rox said, on 21 December, 2011 at 2:31 pm

it’s on Let it Be, just a bit of it. No, it’s an old song

    Happy Christmas anyway. :D

Yes, Merry Xmas to you too, Rox.
