What, they’re not meant to blow up?

Posted in Local news, Odd news by Ray Dixon on 13 January, 2012

Best photo of a jet-ski I've seen yet.

The only thing wrong with this Border Mail story  is the headline, “Blast tosses jet-skier in air”. I would have gone for:

“Blast tosses tosser jet-skier in air”

A MELBOURNE father has had a lucky escape after he was thrown 1.5 metres when a jet-ski exploded on the Murray River near Rutherglen yesterday.

…  a witness, Brad Huggins, of Wahgunyah, said he was emptying the water from his boat at the boat ramp when he heard the explosion about 100 metres away and rushed to the scene.

“I was told he was thrown about eight feet into the air with the main part of the jet-ski still lodged between his legs, (LMAO!)” Mr Huggins said.

(the 55 year old bogan jet-skier) was thrown into the river by the blast.

He was rescued from the water and taken to Corowa hospital with suspected lower back injuries but later allowed to leave.

Comment:

Honestly, what are jet-skis good for? You can’t exactly ski behind them, fish from them or take your friends on a leisurely river cruise. They’re for morons who like to make noise. Petrolheads on water. Bogans on the sea (or river or lake, as the case may be). If you own one of those things … well, there’s no hope for you.

Gee’s! Ray…you are all heart!…….Hmm!….so if enough Jet Skiers were to turn up & book your whole Accommodation Establishment out for a weekend, you would turn them away….No Bogan, Tosser Jet Skiers welcome here……I think not……..it’s stories like this that does harm to any sport, did you bother to find out if he was skylarking around or was it just bad luck that something was faulty with the Jet Ski…….don’t be in such a hurry to tar all Jet Skiers with the one brush.

The same could be said for Harley riders. They are not all beer drinking, tattoo filled, swearing idiots. Last week in Dinner Plain there were 50 or so riders and they were all doctors, lawyers and even politicians.

Your being a bit hard Ray.

  3. Ray Dixon said, on 13 January, 2012 at 4:41 pm

What does a jet ski do, Steve? Goes around in circles. Burning up fuel.

And Andrew, if the Harley owners were Doctors, Lawyers & Politicians, what’s your point? That’s hardly an endorsement.

  4. Ray Dixon said, on 13 January, 2012 at 4:46 pm

Btw, Steve, if a group of jet-skiers wanted to book out GG for a whole weekend (wow a whole 2 days!), I’d say no.

Besides, we don’t accept large group bookings .. of any type. They spell:

    T.R.O.U.B.L.E.

You’d have to be in this business to know what I mean.

Why are you acting like it happens all the time, it doesn’t so whats the problem, the ratio out ways your argument. Would you like a guy who speeds down your street making noise while your asleep disturbing something thats rightfully yours, to enjoy something or would you like peace where no one is around to wake you up. The family has been going camping there for many years, it just so happens that their jet ski’s motor exploded and clearly not disturbing anyone for years. So why is it a problem now? Where is the campaigns to say get these tossers off these jet ski’s. I only see problems with hoons disturbing our freedom and, i dont see a jet ski wraped around a pole or wrapped around a tree or someone who has died at the moment. So if this is your attempt to get noticed, its pretty poor. These guys who ride them are not tossers they happen to be people who can afford something more then a $500 car, and havent been found to break the law like hoons. I dont hear that these people are hoon jet skiers. So if you want to comment on someones fun like this again, then you should take a rare step out side and face the real world where you will find these things are socialy accepted.

    Hi Julie.

I’m not “acting like it happens all the time”. I am simply saying that I think jet-skis are obnoxious and useless inventions. They’re toys for overgrown boys.

  7. Julie Kerdel said, on 17 January, 2012 at 12:23 am

Isn’t it their choice? People have a right to choose their own recreational activities. If you think jet-skis are obnoxious and people are “tossers” for having fun without a purpose, then break out the chess board people, party at the “G.G.” but be sure you keep it small you wouldn’t want T.R.O.U.B.L.E.

You need to rewrite your tourist brochure: “Welcome to the G.G. where T.R.O.U.B.L.E. nor F.U.N. is guaranteed!”

Seriously your point of view would have been better kept to yourself, especially when it is so socially insensitive.

  8. Julie Kerdel said, on 17 January, 2012 at 12:27 am

Neglected to remind you as part of your new brochure: Doctors, Lawyers, politicians, and recreational jetskiers or people who just like to have F.U.N. not welcome at the G.G.

  9. Ray Dixon said, on 17 January, 2012 at 8:39 am

Julie, you know nothing about my business and I’ll thank you not to degrade it like that with your lame attempts at humour. That’s a pretty low way of commenting. I have not personally insulted anyyone in particular so how are my views about jet skis “socially insensitive”? Don’t be ridiculous. Grow up.

I have been on a Jetski overseas. It was great fun. I dont consider myself a “moron who likes to make noise” or a ‘bogan” and who knows one day I might even buy one. Do you also consider all the local kids who ride their motor bikes on the dirt tracks also “morons” or “bogans” its kind of the same thing, its like people that buy high performance cars as they go fast, they might be intelligent people that happen to like fast cars.
    Talk about pigeon hole-ing people. Its like me saying { personal insults edited out }

  11. Ray Dixon said, on 23 January, 2012 at 4:54 pm

No need to get personal, Annie. I’m not directing my views on jet skis at anyone in particular and it’s just a general opinion – ie that it’s moronic to own one. That does not mean all jet ski owners are unintelligent – perhaps it’s just a lapse in judgement (and taste) on their part. Intelligence and good taste are not mutually exclusive you know? And yes, I think dirt biking is a moronic pursuit too – so what?

  12. Annie said, on 23 January, 2012 at 5:15 pm

No need to edit my comments out
I wasnt referring to you directly
I was making a sweeping generalisation just like you were

  13. Ray Dixon said, on 23 January, 2012 at 5:18 pm

Annie, you were making a highly personalised comment clearly directed at me. Please don’t be a nuisance and lie like that. And I’ll decide if there’s a need to edit your comments – it’s my blog. It says so in the sidebar at the top.

  14. Ray Dixon said, on 23 January, 2012 at 5:28 pm

Btw Annie, you’re on the moderation list now – meaning your comments won’t be published until (and unless) I approve them. You don’t mind if I decide what’s acceptable here and what’s not do you?

There is a story about these hoon jet skiers riding over a group of dolphins, thats something worth writing about. Why wouldn’t you care about something like that when an innocent group of dolphins get hit.

Might I suggest in furture to not comment on things like what you wrote about, because you never know who your comments would anger. It seems like Julie Kerdel might know the person, maybe thats why she made raw comments about your property she knows nothing about, like you know nothing about the man making raw comments there. There surely is much more better things to write about then a person injuring him self by an unfortunate accident.

You should always express your opinion, it is Australia. From what i learned from my great grandmother who survived world war 2, in the P.O.W camps this is what she told me after i expressed the an opinion taken the wrong way, this what she told, “In the P.O.W. camps, you are entitled to your opinion, its how you say it that makes it the right opinion.
May great grandmother is 99 this year and i dont think you can get any wiser then what experience she has had.

After reading through the various comments I’ve still not seen anyone comment on the fact a Jetski exploded in the first place. With all my experience with personal watercraft I’ve never heard of a Jetski exploding. These machines are destined to be serviced on a regular basis and with such service, engine malfunction and fuel leaks are almost completely avoided. I understand that servicing comes at a continual high cost but I get the feeling the owner of this particular watercraft has not followed the correct guidlines for servicing 2 stroke engines. This sounds like a case of severe neglect..

Secondly, as an avid surfer with clear understanding of the use of such personal watercraft, I’m not even sure why individuals outside the professional (competitive) surfing industry even own such devices, their original purpose was to drag surfers out to deeper waters to catch bigger waves in surfing competitions, not just to bomb around in lakes and public beaches.. Their popularity in the non-competitive market baffles me..

Aside from this, your use of the word “bogan” seems improperly used. In all my dealings with ‘bogans’ – none have ever had the kind of money required to buy a $15,000 Jetski.. Bogans buy second-hand dirtbikes, not jetski’s, plus the need for a trailer to transport it and the constant fuel top-ups needed to run them for a couple of hours..

    “George”,

You can suggest that as much as you like but the fact is he wasn’t injured, according to the report. If he had been I probably wouldn’t have written the post. Okay? But I don’t need you to tell me how to run my blog. Btw, I haven’t heard about the dolphin incident but that would hardly be local news in this area, would it? Maybe on the Surf Coast it would be news.

    “Brendan”,

Aside from this, your use of the word “bogan” seems improperly used

I don’t think so. And bogans can afford $50,000 cars, so I guess a $15,000 jet ski is within their credit range too. What makes you think all bogans are poor? Btw, are you “George” or “Brendan” or … “Julie”? Please pick one name and stick with it. How’s the surf?

George, I won’t be publishing your response. You are commenting from the same computer as “Brendan” & “Julie” so please don’t say you don’t know who they are. Capiche?

  19. Ray Dixon said, on 1 February, 2012 at 2:16 pm

“George”, I won’t publish your latest comment either but you can read my response to you while it’s held in moderation.
